Starter Noises After Spark Plugs Replaced
Every now and then, I hear a metal crashing sound when I turn the key to start the car -- just before the engine turns over. The problem began/was caused by work I had done on the car. The spark plugs were replaced, leaking engine valve cover fixed, and the throttle body was cleaned. The mechanic who worked on the car heard it, told the manager, then the manager told me that I'd probably have to replace the starter at some point.
I have done nothing so far. It's not often that I hear it, maybe once a week or so, but it sure doesn't sound good when it happens. Sounds like metal is tearing, but it only lasts a second before the engine turns over and starts.
Appreciate any feedback you can give me. I'm here to get a second opinion on whether replacing the starter is the only option.

I have the issue to, as far as I've heard on here it's usually the plunger that goes, or the solenoids. Mines slot more frequent though, beating around the bush to get to it, heard it's a crapload of a job

I have a '95 LS400 that needed the starter replaced and I made the mistake of using a "good" rebuilt starter from Napa instead of buying the "life time" starter . Shortly after the Guaranty period expired the Over-Running clutch Ate itself one morning. Lesson learned with LS400 engines always get the very best parts you can get !! Because you do not want to replace those starters more than one time. I really do not understand putting the starter where it is on these !!!! The same goes for the "Caddy"Northstars.Their starter is in the same spot although I have never changed one of those. I'm suspecting your starter may be "dieing" Check and see !!!

Have you been watching how the mechanic did those jobs?
I assume he did something wrong other than the spark plugs change, the leaking engine valve cover fix and the throttle body cleaning. Those are supposed to be not causing any metal crashing sound. You'd better to find out the source of it. I worry about the mechanic has left something in the engine or forgot to do something.
I have experienced many mechanics did poor jobs when I was living in SC and that forced me to decide to fix cars myself. I still do so in Japan although mechanics here are generally better in mechanical area.

Starter issues are pretty simple, it either clicks or does nothing when the ignition key is turned. If it clicks and subsequent turns of the key the car starts that is another symptom of a starter going south. If the plunger isn't returning the sound will be somewhat similar to starting the car when it is already running.
Are you sure it is a metal on metal crash or a short squeal? When it doesn't catch and if you turn the key again, the belt may have enough slack that allows the pulley to spin slightly emitting a short quick squeal/chrip.

Make sure the shop didn't leave a bolt or socket in the throttle body or drop one under the intake. An unskilled mechanic who is not familiar with Lexus will do that!
