95 LS 400 - Transmission Problems?
I put my car in reverse last night & I noticed that I had to "push" the gas to get it to back up.
This morning I put my car in drive and it felt like the car was running "rough". I had to really apply the gas to pick up speed. I turned around went home & when I got there smoke started billowing out of the car. I lifted the hood and the smoke was coming out of the "back" of the engine. It had a smell like "smoke" or slight burning.
I am new to the Lexus family and have no idea what the problem could be.
Any suggestions.

Welcome to Club Lexus.
Many possibilities to check. Firstly, when was the last fluid service on the tranny? Check the condition of the fluid and let us know. It should be a bright to burgundy red. If not, there are threads in the FAQ on what to do for transmission service.

the smoke you smelled/saw could be from a cracked lower EGR pipe, or it could be your transmission fluid leaking out
after verifying the level on the dipstick, try adding 3/4 of a quart of genuine Toyota T-IV fluid, if that temporarily fixes the shifting, that would indicate either a low initial level, or a leak.
When my '96 had this same rough running, smoke, and shifting issue, the problem turned out to be failing ECU capacitors (the ECU handles all shifting control on LS400) and Florida is the number 1 most common state for this issue!
you need to go to an auto parts store such as Autozone, Advance, or O'Reilly and have the car scanned for diagnostic codes, or order this $17 scanner that is a good one online
