1993 Lexus LS400 jerking problem
Calamari, sorry to hear about the problems you're having. These Lexus's have a mind of their own don't they?I saved a ton of money by searching and being patient on Ebay.I got a very good rack & pinion for the '93 for $200.00,a throttle body for $100.00,a new throttle position sensor for $29.85,the ECU for $285.00 and so on.A friend of mine at a repair shop in Centerville,Ga. replaced the timing belt/water pump with a Lexus belt and pump for around $430.00,parts and labor. That was a great deal for me.I didn't complain when I got the bill.Labor for the rack was about $125.00.The only new parts I had to buy was the EGR crossover pipe from the Lexus dealer for $248.00 and $600.00 for a new Lexus idle air control valve. Then there was the speedometer cluster that was repaired for $153.00 with shipping. It could've been a lot worse, but as I said earlier,it took a lot of patience. It's wonderful to have friends there to help.On the other hand,I compensate them with great 50's,60's,70's oldies on CD's as a show of my appreciation for their help.
I hope all goes well with your repairs.Shortly,I'll have to ship the cluster back as the speedometer needle still sticks when it shouldn't be.I hate taking the cluster back out.But I did it once and I'll do it again. But it's much easier to put back in.Maybe my '93 didn't like me calling it "THE HOG"after I got it Feb. 27th,lol.

Carlamari,a couple weeks ago,my mechanic checked my new plugs I had installed in March and found them to be white as snow.He said my air and fuel mixture wasn't right.I was getting too much air and not enough fuel.He checked the fuel filter and sure enough,it was clogged. He replaced it and serviced the tranny with a new filter and type 4 fluid. When I first got the car,the transmission was not shifting properly. Now,it's shifting like it's suppose to.And the new fuel filter sure helped to stop the jerking along with me getting lucky and getting the TPS in just the right spot with no continuity reading on an ohm meter at idle. That's what it took to stop the jerking.I also remember a couple times when I put it in reverse and drive, the tranny had a very hard jerk in those gears.Since I got the service done,it hasn't done it anymore, knock on wood.
LexusAl...Well thank you for the heads up:-) some of the repairs I have never heard of to be honest, but I am going to totally go threw this car, I love the way it looks, and handles, and I could be making payments, but I'm up grading this lovely ride:-) You happen to know where I could get the hydraulics for my fans????? Mine got tired, I guess LOL She has 180,000 mile!!!
both of y'all would benefit greatly from replacing the ECU caps, as this is a common and known defect on your years of LS400 and SC400 and that will solve many of these little gremlins, including the not running right.
at least pull your ECU and look at the inside and post up some pics - Yamae and I can spot the problem in most cases.

Hi LScowboyLS,I'd surely like to pull the ECU and look at the caps. But when I purchased the replacement ECU from south Fl.,they said if it was opened up,that would void my lifetime warranty. My LS400 is running great at this time.So I don't want to do anything that would void that warranty.I checked my gas mileage this past week and I'm getting right at 25 MPG City/hiway-mostly hiway driving. So that's not too bad for a 20 year old car.The only thing that's wrong is after the engine warms up,I get a very slight hesitation when taking off,you can hardly feel it but it's there. Also, when I first crank the car up when cold, some white smoke comes out the tail pipes but only for an instant, then it goes away. It's probably no big deal.
I'm now working on getting the factory Radio/CD player put back in the dash. The only problem is,it takes the Nakamichi and not the Pioneer according to the Lexus dealership.I bought the Pioneer on Ebay not knowing at the time that it was Nakamichi. So I'll have to resell the Pioneer and get the Nakamichi, part # 86120-50250.I found several on Ebay. But I'll get one with a warranty.I'm going to drive to the Lexus dealership today to confirm the car carries the Nakamichi premium sound system before buying one by them inspecting the plug in harnesses. That's the best way to handle it.

Maybe I shouldn't do this since it's not car related. But I'm going to post it anyway.I'm a Vietnam Veteran and the very best present I could ever get is to see my Vietnam buddies again.I haven't seen them in 44 years. It would do me a world of good to see them again after all these years.Just to let them know I'm still on this side of the grass. So many of them I can not remember by name. But I'd know them if I saw them.Only a few by name.Larry Troxtell,Mike Smith,Capt. Charles Murdzak,Capt Ted Heath, and Phil Steinke. So many others I can't remember by name.My closest buddy,Elton Spurgeon passed away March 20th 2003 from complications of Diabetes.I got lucky and located his wife and she informed me of what happened.I tried to locate him in 1985 and my U.S. Senator wouldn't help me.Now he's gone and I'll never see him again. My tour of duty in 'Nam was Nov. 22 1968 to Nov. 21st 1969.I was in the 63rd Heavy Equipment Maintenance Company,79th Maintenance Battalion,1st Logistics Command. If anyone knows of the whereabouts of any of these fine men, please don't hesitate to let me know.I would be forever grateful. And you would make one Vietnam Veteran the happiest man on Earth.BTW,my 1993 LS400 is still running great.I got very lucky at adjusting that aggravating throttle position sensor. Thanks and pardon my interruption from the norm.Al
BTW,I forgot to mention I was stationed at Long Binh,South Vietnam about 15 miles northeast of Saigon. My buddies took very good care of me after getting seriously injured on Feb. 13th 1969.And I would like to thank them again for all they did for me and putting up with me yelling in pain all night long that first night after coming back to the Company. My C.O. stayed with me all night that first night and made sure I took my prescribed medicine. He was the very best C.O. in the Army. But thanks to The Lord,I made it through.Al
