Default 92 LS400 Remote Keyless Entry

Recently my keyless entry stopped working. I was wondering if anyone has encoutered this before on a 90-92 LS400. The dealership wants me to buy a new remote and ROM. I'm assuming that means a new key and a new transmitter in the car? I bought a Key off ebay doesn't anyone know if it's possible to program this for my car or do I need a new transmitter in the car as well?

I have the same problem..

90-92 had a different system for the remove entry. There's not really any 'multi-function computer' involved that controls beep alerts or anything, it just unlocks and lock the doors. Pretty primitave..

Dealer quoter like $350 just for the computer and a key. I'd rather upgrade to a 1993 or 1995 before spending that much on fixing a remote unlock ROM and key..

Default remote

So essentially if the key breaks, I have no choice but to get a new ROM as well? What is a ROM by the way?

Have you tried replacing the battery in the key? I have a 93 and the remote stopped working so I read some threads and found out I could replace the battery and both keys work perfectly again.

Default Battery

Yep, already tried two brand new batteries, same result, as well the switch on the dash for remote is set to on as well. I wonder if the switch on the dash is broken?

well, one solution would be to spend $200 and get a remote starter installed. you'll get two remotes, all the capabilites of the keyless entry, and a remote starter. and still save money for gas at the end. oh and might I add, you wont have to stand next to the car to use the keyless entry which in my opinion made little sense.
oh and might I add, you wont have to wait 5 minutes in the cold before your heated seats / heat would finally make it cozy !

HEY! http://lexusownersclub.co.uk/forum/i...T&f=48&t=3559&
You registered recently so it looks like you need a lot of help. I lost the power key for my 94 ls400 and I was told I would need $300 to get the car a new keyless set.

Default Remote key

I was at the Lexus dealership today and asked them a few questions about remotes. They told me they think they can program a new key if I get one. (I've ordered one off ebay and it shold be here in a week or so) at that point I will take it into the dealership and see what they can do. Sounds to me like the dealership is clueless and people on this forum know more! I will probably find out in a few weeks here when the key arrives whether it will work.

When you say computer and key do you mean the computer inside the head of the key or is this a device in the car? Because I purchased this device here http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...tem=1876696212

Here's my question.
now that you've bought a key, do you only want to use the remote feature using this one ? and keep the original to start the car etc ?

I suppose I could do that, or I could take the key apart and take the transponder out of the key head and place it in the key that fits my car. Depends how easy it looks when I get my key apart.

If you have a 92 Lexus LS, you have no transponder

When I say transponder what I meant was the small chip inside the head of the key. Note sure if that's refered to as a transponder or not

Default Everything sorted out

Everything has been sorted out, like everyone said the Keys are sold with a corresponding chip for the car (ROM). Keys for first gen LS400's can't be programmed. Well I've finally purchased a key/Rom set. Does anyone know where the ROM (Chip) goes inside the car? I'm assuming it must be somewhere near the ECU possibly?

One thing I forgot to add. I took the car to the dealership and they put my radio on 94.9 FM and hit the unlock button on the old key (Heard nothing out the speakers) so they determined it was the Key that was broken (the ROM/ Computer chip in the car worked fine) I just received the set of the new Key and ROM and I put the radio on 94.9 and hit the unlock button with the new key and you could hear it transmitting. Found it kind of interesting that, that's how the diagnose the keyless entry problems for 1st gen ls400's. Hopefully someone's replaced this before, otherwise I'm going to the dealership to have the ROM installed? Also does anyone know if I just install the ROM is it going to work , is there any kind of programming involved?
