What is the best choice for new spark plugs?
Hi. I am new to the forum. I just bought a 1991 LS400 with 176K miles. Drives pretty good but I am just starting to do a complete tune up. The specs call for NGK:BKR6EP11 which are copper. Will the car run better with Iridium plugs?

No, it will not run better with Iridium spark plugs. Iridium plugs should last longer but I wouldn't worry about that on an LS400 with 176,000 miles.
I've now driven LS400's a total of 302,000 miles and I have never seen any difference in how the engines have performed after a spark plug change. The normal spark plug change interval on the 91 LS400 is 90,000 miles. Beginning in 1999, when Iridium spark plugs were first used, the change interval became 120,000 miles.

I'm using the new Denso Platinum TT plugs in our other car. I'm impressed with the performance, and the price is reasonable. I'll switch the Lexus to them the next time I change the plugs. IMO, Denso is the best choice in sparkplugs.

The Toyota engines I have had do not like anything other than the factory plugs, which are DENSO or NGK.
You can get these art most parts stores.

Ngk are Oem for some Toyota engines as well.
I have an 2001 4Runner with the 3.4 ,6 cylinder and the original plugs were Ngk on one bank, and Denso on the other.
I understand this is the way all these 4Runners were and that it has to do with maintaining more than one parts supplier.
I suppose the Bosch may be fine for the LS v8, but the v6 in the 4Runner did not like them.
I am really enjoying the new to me LS, but I'll keep the 4Runner as my go anywhere, anytime, no matter what the conditons are, backup vehicle.

the purpose of iridium and platinum is to make a plug that lasts 100,000 miles or so. copper gives a better spark, but wears down a lot faster. you actually lose a lttle co[erwth the spak. unless you are going for some really high end perfrmance, you can use the iridium or platinum. denso or ngk. reports on bosch are not consistently favorable. and don't forget to test or just replace the wires.

^^what he said. I havebeen an NGK freak for awhile now and have never had a bad experience. Though I no longer have my Lex anymore, I will still use the brand when the time comes.

I used NGK platinum plugs just today and all the old plugs were probably from the factory in 1990-89 lol. The old plugs were also NGK but copper, they were real real old and noticeably tired. I'm waiting on an alternator, wires and a 2 new caps and rotors before I fire her back up, but I have never had a problem using NGK or denso plugs.
On a somewhat related note are the yec cap and rotor kits worth the extra price??

I bought this car with 180k on it. The local Lexus Dealership has on file that they changed the spark plugs last at 120,000 miles. They say the plugs are 120,000 mile plugs and that they don't need replaced until 240,000 miles.
Should I go ahead and change them out anyways? Perhaps go with NGK vpower instead and change every 30k miles? I wonder if NGK v power would give me better gas mileage/ performance.

i dont know if my plugs were changed.. but Im assuming not since my tbelt wasnt changed... just did 26-28mpg trip to NC and back. I've been holding off on changing the plugs.. I have a new set of iridium ones sitting on my kitchen table.
