94 LS400 tacho needle illumination problem
Hi all!
I just searched the CL forums and the internet for a DIY solution for fixing the tacho needle illumination, but I could not find any.
I found the DIY for the 90-94 model cluster, but I have a late 94 model (also with bigger braking discs etc.) which has a different cluster.
Can anybody tell me if there is a DIY for this?
The problem occurred today and it can be described as that the "upper" part (i.e. the tip) of the needle is flickering, while the "lower" part (i.e. the part more to the middle of the gauge) is still working.
I have sold my car and I want to fix it for the next owner, so no time left for shipping it to the US (I live in Europe).
Thanks in advance!!

The black backing has seperated on the needle itself. It's conductive and is how the needle gets power. Superglue + conduit pen and sharpie is your friend. There how-to is in the huge cluster thread, but it's basically glue the backing back onto the needle, use conduit pen to fill in the crack and then sharpie over it.

Ok, and how do I get there without ruining the needle? Does it just pop off?
And are you sure that this also works for the UCF11 (> end 1994) models?
I guess it is this topic: https://www.clublexus.com/forums/ls4...ml#post5559611

a few posts above it, with pics; https://www.clublexus.com/forums/5072566-post289.html
Needle stays on, you just take the cluster out of the car, take the cover off the cluster and very carefully and with a gentle hand do this to the needles where they are. Doesn't require anything complicated, and you just use the slightest pressure to hold the backing to the needle until the glue dries. Don't push the needles down past "0" and you'll be fine.
Mine is a 1993 and it worked flawlessly. Open your cluster and look at the needle, the tip will have the black conductive backing peeling away, you'll see what I mean.

So, I managed to fix it!
The needle is the same as the pre 1994 models.
Cause:
Result (if you look close, you can see it is repaired, but at least it is working again):

The cause lies in 3 capacitors within the tacho unit, look it up, there are lots of posts about it.
