Didn't see anything in lighting or electrical FAQ about low-beam headlights on the '98 LS400. I know they are D2R bulbs, but all I can find for replacements are Sylvania's which are all standard 35W replacements. Know of any other brands/options out there which give the low-beams a better look? Mine look yellowish compared to the super white factory HID headlights. Thanks.
Not exactly. Mine do not come on and stay on when the engine is running so I don't think they are DRL. They are the switched "parking lights" I guess. Low-beam was not the correct term. Sorry.
You may be correct. So, you don't have HID's? Mine has DRL's, which turn on with the engine.
Well now you got me thinking. Yes, I have HID, but I don't think the "parking lights" come on automatically. For example, when I turn the car on in the morning, in my garage, it's dark until I turn the switch one click forward. Then the instrument lights come on as well. Maybe I am not explaining this correctly?
There is some kind of light that goes into the headlight when just the parking lights are on to make the headlights look blingin' . You can see it with DRL if you have the parking lights on and the car off. I'm not sure what bulb that is though.

98's don't have the DRL option. they come standard on the 99 and 00 iirc.
sounds like you are talking about your parking lights. get LED bulbs for them, 5k or 6k ratings. wedge bulb 194 i if i remember correctly. check the lighting FAQ.
yes, it is a 194/168 bulb then. very easy to change. i have mine in a white LED, though it's not as bright as i expected. planning to upgrade later in the near future!

Are you sure your headlights are HID? Halogen headlights were common on the 98 LS but rare on the 99 and 00 LS. What is stamped on your headlight lenses? D2R or HB2?

and for visual confirmation, the outter lenses are the HID low beams, the inners are the halogen High Beams/DRL ('99+ for USA).
OP Are you talking about the 194/168 LED that goes inside the housing?
Thanks for the input everyone. After a little closer inspection here is what I found: standing in front of the car if you look in the upper right corner of the outer light housing (where the HID low-beam is) you will see a small bulb poking out. These were the lights I was referring to. And yes, they are standard halogen
5w wedge bulbs which explains the "yellow" look. Popped those out and quickly and replaced them with some spare LEDs I had. Looks soooo much better now. So for the record, this '98 does NOT have DRL, it does have HID low-beams, 9005 bulbs for high-beams and an overall unsual light setup (see my previous thread about the non-functioning cornering lights). Cheers.

for the US market that's not unusual, the corner lights next to the fogs aren't supposed to have bulbs due to NHTSA regulations on the max. no. of forward facing bulbs.

Wow, this is actually a rule? I suppose it doesn't apply to aftermarket add-ons? Like the guys who have 14 aircraft landing lights on the front of thier trucks?
