Default A/c problem

When I turn my a/c on it smells like freon. It works fine but it started doing this recently. Any ideas?

If you can actually smell freon with your nose from the vent's there is definitely a leak in there. Make sure it is coming from the vents (evaporator case) and not from the passenger side floorboard if you can. Usually leaks are detected with a refrigerant sniffer because they're usually pretty subtle. If this just started happening you may lose your freon in the near future and your A/C will quit working.

If this happen's my guess is that your evaporator core has failed spewing refrigerant into you evaporator case then through the vents. This happened on my '96 and I've seen it happen on many other car's so these things seem to fail at some point on the LS. Don't bother trying to fit an aftermarket core in the case as it just won't fit right. Find an OEM evaporator core, either new or salvaged. I went the salvaged route and am happy with the results.

The evaporator core is accessed from the passenger side floor board after removing the glovebox and blower case. It slides out from the evaporator case into the passenger side foot well.

This may not be your issue but it's what I'm guessing the problem is from what you've said so far. If you're unsure have a pro diagnose the problem so you know where to start. Most A/C shops will diagnose for very little as they gain their customers that way...
