91 LS400 fog light
I would like to change the fog lights of my 91 LS400 to HID H3 bulb but found out the connect is different. The old H3 bulb has 2 legs and the new H3 has a wire attached to it. The old bulb is very difficult to find. I wonder if I can replace the connects of the car so I can use the new H3 bulb.

I've had to do this twice so far. Big pain disassembling the headlight assembly just to replace a bulb, huh?
I tried to find an aftermarket version, but I think it doesn't exist. Both times I ended up purchasing the bulb from the dealer. It really doesn't burn out often enough to make it worthwhile trying to modify it. Now if the dealer didn't carry the bulb anymore, that would be a different story.

The dealer have to order it for me. I just think changing the connector is no big deal ( cut the wire and spice the new connector ) and it will fix any further hussel once for all.

hey,
I have a '90 and I put HID's for fogs. I had the same senario, but I just made a plug (easy) and connected it to the live wire. I think it is a good idea to use the fogs as HIDs, because theoretically they would have less glare to oncomming traffic b/c of those little casing sheild things to direct light down and out.
Do you already have headlight HID's?
(Anyway, since I don't have HID's in my regular headlights, I thought it would be cool to have DRLs since the HID's have a significantly longer life-they can just be on ALL THE TIME! I just connected the fogs to my parking lights, so now the HID fogs are my DRL's.)---an idea
BY the WAY, Has anyone considered getting dual beam HID's for the regular headlights--9004??

zumiez83,
Thanks for your info. That's exactly what I intended to do. What kind of plug you use and where to get it ? Can you show me some details ? Maybe a wiring drawing or something like that.

For the fogs I just got a plug like the old bulb and stuck it in, easy as that. I don't know what the connector's technical name is, but just take your old bulb to the hardware store and find a matching plug. Just walk in, ask an associate and you'll be out of the store in no time. I tried to look for it, but I'm not experienced in the buying of plugs, so it took a while to find the perfect match....(The store was really, really big--an electrician's store)
For the parking lights, you can do the exact same thing, but just find a smaller connector and you're set. Or, you can splice.
I'm pretty sure the live wire is the green one. BUT I don't really remember......But I remember the 24,000 volts.....just kidding...
The whole process is pretty logical once you start, so it'll be fun.
To save you some worrying, just make sure your ground wire from the ballasts is really, really secure. B/c mine would sometimes not be secure, then one of my lights would go out, and then I would panic because I thought it was the bulbs dying on me.

I did the fog light mod today. I just plug the wire of H3 bulb to the existing connector live wire and make a ground wire from the light housing and connect it to the existing plug ground wire. After that it works. Where is the ballast anyway ?
