Default Powerloss...

Hi!

Thanks for a great forum! I found you when googleing som issues I have on my new bought LS400 -92.
The car was really cheap for swedish terms and looks like a million $, the problem the last owner had was loss of power and leaking exhaust gaskets.
I tried to check the error codes with no luck (Launch x-431), but I could get in to live data. I can see that all for O2 sensors are working even if they where not balanced. The car hesitated on acceleration but where fairly powerful.
I changed the exhaust gaskets and the engine run lot smoother, but the power is maybe even less than before ?!?
The fumes smells pretty burnt as if the HC value is high.
It idles like a normal car, meaning to rough for a Lexus...

The car is really weak when cold and little bit better when warm. Last owner changed the sparks to platinum with no luck.

My theory is that the cats are gone, pretty ok after 250' miles? Or is there any other Lexus related problems I should look at before changeing them?

Coils? Well, maybe. Leads? Distribuator?
To clearify the issue:
When the car is cold, it,s totally powerless. The trottle feels lite stepping on a dead cats tale... It's so weak that I just barely can pull out from my driveway. When warm (btw, it doesn't come up to more than 1/4 on the scale, I guess I need to replace the thermostate) it feels like I'm pulling a train. The fuelconsumtion is close to a Ford Excursion V10, I believe.
When idling I can see how the hood is shaking a bit, so it doesn't run well at all...

Default How to test ignition coils.

See attachment. Information from alldatadiy.com.

You can buy them from either Sewell Lexus which is a CL Sponsor there the forum members have reduced prices. See http://is.sewellparts.com/clublexus.php for more info. Only problem is that the shipping to Sweden is quite expensive.

You can also buy from Ebay. Found this, http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/NEW-High-Q...item3a6e15e3ba

As you probably know is the item no. 9091902197 for the coils only or 1908050010 (on top of motor) and 1909050010 (on the driver side of motor) with cord and bracket. When I bought new coils I bought them with brackets for a easier install.

You said the previous owner changed the spark plugs to v power? Did he change the wires as well? From my understanding NGK plugs only work well with NGK wires.

this is not true at all. plug wires are plug wires and provided they're made for the car (proper lengths and coil connector) they will fit fine.

many have used non-ngk plugs with ngk wires.

please do not post hearsay, or anything you are not sure of...

I agree. Even if the original leads are good, there are those who's better (Magnacore etc). The plugs fitted are NGK Platinum and they work alot better then most other brands and far better than the ones Lexus fitted in 1992. The idea with platinum plugs are of cause that they give a secure spark, but also that they are supposed to last longer. The original leads are a bit on the thin side, but they to the job. To be 100% sure on the spark, filtered leads can make a huge difference.

However, I don't think this is my problem, I think it's the coils. We'll know for sure tomorrow when they arrive. I'll keep you posted on the resault

Well, I just had a few minutes over today, so I only changed the top coil.
What a change! Most of the origin 244 bhp are back and kicking wild!

The car is still a bit restless when idle, so I hope that will pass when I change the other coil.

Thanks alot for your inputs, I'll stick this site to my favorites!

PS. Changed the thermostate and it made a big change Ds
