my check engine light recently came on and is the code P0420 Catalyst System Efficiency Bellow Threshold Bank 1.. any help would help thanks

 

search. common issue, rarely serious. usually an exhaust leak.

 

is there some kind of diy for the exhaust system?

 

its a leak. look for it. what kind of DIY would you want

 

My egr pipe is cracked and I occasionally get the same code. I just clear it and it comes back in about a month. Just been putting it off for a year at least hah.

 

I believe that was the code I had on my 96 and it was a leaky exhaust. It was on a bend and just old age rusted through. Try to find a shop that won't insist on changing out the catalyst, just custom make a new pipe section and weld it in.

Climb under and start listening and feeling for the leak, should be easy to find. Mine was under the heat shield:
