Default water pump replacement

What's up, I'm about to do a timing job and need to know what type of sealent to use for the water pump. I got some high temp that a guy at autozone recommended but I'm not 100% its good for sealing the pump. Has anyone else done this repair and what type did you use. Thanks

Yea that sealant will work for ya. That's not a bad kit you're getting from RockAuto but Idk if that water pump is OEM. They're real quick with shipping, I recommend them. Plus, if you didn't put your order in yet, get the crank and cam seals from there also. They're less then 4 bucks each and they are OEM. (Beck/Arnley) Change them now while ya have everything off, it's only another 15 minutes work. When you do the T-belt job remember to put thread "sealer" on the WP bolts, and thread "locker" on the tenioner idler pulley bolt.

My 98' LS OEM pump came with a gasket, no FIPG (Form In-Place Gasket) needed. That's the route I would go if you can. What year is your LS?

He's got a '92. When I changed mine last year I used the gasket and high temp sealer. I haven't had a problem yet. When you use the sealer, do NOT put too much on. After it dries the excess will come loose, travel through the coolant system, and clog up anything that it can. (and overheat) The common place is the small tube coming out the coolant resevoir.

I bought the LX470 OEM kit off ebay that came with the gasket (metal with rubber/polymer O-ring). Asked the Lexus mechanics (at Westside Lexus in Houston) and they said install the supplied gasket DRY... do not add RTV or anything else. Mine works great. No leaks. I did need to use RTV at the waterbridge rectangular fitting as the 470 one included was the wrong size. Make CERTAIN that this intersection seats properly as mine did not and I had to re-do. Thankfully that is the easiest place to fix. Clean the surfaces and tap the parts together gently with a soft faced hammer. It is tight and takes finesse.

Here is the same parts I purchased which are supposed to be all OEM. 92' parts will be slightly different but should be the same supplier.

Yes, I would agree...do not use FIPG if you have a gasket. The REALLY important point is to properly torque all of your pump bolts in a proper pattern to insure no leaks.

I guess there are different opinions on using sealant. I'm not sure either about a WP gasket in that kit from Rockauto or the 2 O-rings you're gonna need. The good thing with this kit is ALL the major parts are there. (including tensioner) If ya need to buy the gasket and O-rings, at least they're cheap enough. Personally I wouldn't use that "make a gasket" paper garbage, but that's just me, bad experience. Like I said before, don't forget to do the seals.

tonyfazt;
JB weld?? instead of changing an O-ring? What, are ya nuts?

I would do it 10 times if I had to just to know everything was done the right way. I'd hate to be 500 miles from nowhere and have a piece of garbage JB Weld come loose and overheat and blow the engine just b/c I didn't do a few extra hours of labor to change an O-ring that I knew was bad. Nothing personal though.
