1991 LS400 Odometer Tanin gear or service?
Odometer stopped last year at 105000 or so miles.
Took out the odometer and the gear is obviously broken.
Local Speedo Shop in So Cal wasted my time telling me to bring it in because
they "probably" had the parts but then when I got there said nope, no one makes
those gears any more.
Hoping to elicit some stories from people who either bought the gear ($75) or sent
their odometer in for the repair service (~$250 I think).
(This is regarding Tanin website https://www.taninautoelectronix.com/ )
Looks like swapping the gear might be easy... am I wrong?
Thanks!
TOP VIEW. The clear plastic "cup" was protecting the worm gear and it pops off
BOTTOM VIEW. HALF the gear is still on the shaft, the other half is in the "cup"
L SIDE. What happens if I try to *rotate*(?) that metal leaf that seems to be applying pressure to the end of the shaft with the broken gear?
R SIDE. Hoping for the SECRET KNOWLEDGE to appear in a reply!

At $75:00 each should include a lifetime warranty.
Can you post images of the gear mechanism.

Spoke to Jeff for 30 minutes.
They live in the World of mechanical odometers and speedometers
They have multi-cavity tooling for all plastic gears sold
Jeff agreed to take a look at your assembly and believes he can tool your gear utilizing existing cores....provided it is reasonably intact.
All tooling, production and raw material sourcing is U.S...no Chinese anything.
He can also recommend correct lubricants (Should any be required) for bearing and gear surfaces.
Post what your findings.

Nice job yodaone,
I'm surprised nobody reverse engineered this into a digital unit by now, maybe they alread have I don't know.
Not sure if its legal as I'm not knowledgable about laws with speedos.
Just thinking a microcontroller driven backlit LCD would be nice, maybe too much work and not worth it.
I don't have this Lexus model but if I did I would want to do some playin' around. lol

Hard tooling or 3-D printing?
Please post images of tooling.

Wish I could have sent the whole instrument cluster but my daughter uses the car so I sent only the odometer to Tanin for them to fix and they did. Now I can keep track of service intervals again! My daughter put at least 6000 miles on the digital trip meter while the mechanical odo was dead/missing. Used the lexls.com guidance for cluster removal. Made one BIG mistake: after moving the steering wheel down I paused for some reason, then later took the key out before disconnecting the battery. The wheel did it's AUTO RETRACT, always does, I failed to realize that was undoing my procedure. When I could not get the cluster out after partially disconnecting it, I realized what happened with the steering wheel. So I connected the battery again to move the wheel back down (and turned off auto retract). When I get it all buttoned up, there is the SRS AIRBAG light! Arghhh! Of course the smart ECU detected a fault in the SRS circuit when it was partially disconnected and will remember it forever. Spent a couple of hours building a jig to connect to DLC2 to help me reset the fault light.
The Lexus TSB I found on this site makes it look like the alternating grounds have to overlap; I could not make that work.
More lexls.com help worked for me:
"So if that didn't make sense here's the short version:
Tc + ground, AB + ground, Tc + ground, AB + ground, Tc + ground and hold."
Also bought a refurbished Climate Control box from Tanin.
About $200 for the odometer fix, and about the same for the refurbished Climate Control.

Thanks to all who have contributed over the years! Hope lexls.com and this site last forever!
After replacing Odometer and Climate Control
Jig made it easy to pulse Tc and AB to reset SRS AIRBAG light (because I had a DLC2 mating donor connector)
