1994 LS400 165K I was able to get to shift out of gear by reading the Lexus book but I still have no brake lights and have to use emergency white button to get car out of park. It looks like fuse in thee fuse box has a brown spot on it but adding a new fuse did not do the trick. Sometimes I am able to get it out of park but the brake lights still do not work and then shifter sticks again. One time break lights were working but stayed on when the car was shut off.
Any ideas on what may be causing this.
It sounds like the brake light switch on your brake pedal has gone bad. When this switch fails to operate properly, it will cause the transmission shift lever to stay locked in park.
The replacement switch should be pretty cheap. Unfortunately, it's rather hard to get to it (unless you are a contortionist). The switch is at the top of the brake pedal.
My wife's 94 ES just went through this. A new switch fixed the problems.

I'm quite positive that it's your brake light switch. They run about $20 and you can replace it yourself quite easily. If you lay on your back and follow the brake peddle up under the dash you'll see the switch. Just pop off the wiring harness, twist and pop it out. Pop in the new one, adjust it's length so the peddle depresses the switch and attach the harness. 10 minute job at most.
