LS400 compatability between '96 &' 98

LS400 compatability between '96 &' 98
okay, here it goes, I got a '96 LS400 about 2 weeks ago. It has 224k miles. I believe the EGR valve is bad(according to diagnostic test), but my good buddy has a '98 LS400, with a perfectly good engine/parts. Are they compatible with eachother, or am I S. O. L.??? thx for taking ur time to help me out.
