Transmission
The transmission in my '97 LS400 died yesterday and my mechanic tells me it needs to be replaced. Not repaired. I am wondering what my options are between purchasing a new one if possible or rebuilt.
Anyone ever had to deal with something like this?

What kind of problems are you having, do you really trust this guy. It could be a simple fix. Are the clutch plates completely gone, did one of the gears or shafts give out? Is it just a bad sensor or something stuck in the valve body?

My guess would be something/particle is clogged in the valve body that is stopping oil pressure so your clutch isn't engaging. Doesn't sounds like an out-right transmission failure.

I've heard that a 1990-1994 LS400 will accept the sportier 1990-1994 SC400 transmission without fault. I was wondering about the same with the 1996-1997 SC400 trans and the 1996-1997 LS400.
Here's what price research on Lexus of Pembroke Pines showed up.
SC400 trans - 1997 - 1976.04 + 1000 core
SC400 trans - 1996 - 3982.95 no core
SC400 trans - 1995 - 2288 + 1000 core
LS400 trans - 1995-97 - 1974 +1000 core
3 different years of SC400, ostensibly from the same generation, three different transmissions and prices. Hmm....

the wiring and # of solenoids is different for the SC tranny, so while its somewhat possible, it's a significant amount more work than the same year car.
and afaik the earlier A340 wont work because the '95-97 LS uses OBDII diagnostics, which is tied into the trans as well.
