Default 96 Shifting Issue

I have a 1996 Lexus LS400. Last month had to replace my starter, they couldn't even rebuild it. Drove fine for about 3 weeks, then last week I was driving around fine, stopped, left the car on, for about 5 minutes, then as I was driving away I noticed my engine not shift, and noticed on dash that even though I was in Drive, Low was also highlighted on my HUD. I immediately pulled over to safe location and tried turning car off and back on, and when I switch to drive it immediately highlights Low on my dash. Reverse works, and Low works fine. It does not shift out of low. Any ideas? I am in Tuscaloosa, AL so I can't get to a Lexus dealer, but I got my starter replaced last month at Toyota dealer.

Thanks for all the help

I am going to try to get my car to a mechanic shop to read the computer codes, what else should I be looking for?

I took it and they ran computer test and battery tests and everything was coming back fine. They told me to take it to a transmission specialty shop. Anyone have an idea of what amount I will be looking at here? Its over 180k miles right now, and ran perfectly until last year and ive spent too much on it already trying to keep it going, just not sure how much more is worth to put into it if i am just going to keep having problems

thanks
