Default No power, glowing red cat, misfire, at my wits end

Guys and gals, I am at my wits end with my Lex. I have a '91 LS 400. I am getting a severe misfire. I am getting no CEL and I have also checked the trunk wiring harness where it meets the black connector. I am idling at 500rpm and when I throttle the car up, it seems to stumble then also. I am smelling raw gas out the exhaust and it takes putting the accelerator to the floor to climb the slight incline into my driveway. I just changed the wires and put all new Denso Iridium plugs in. NO change, still running terrible. Any suggestions before I have this thing towed to the dealer. note: I have new rotors and distributor caps, but have not installed those as of yet.

Ignition coil was done the day before the hurricane. And sorry for snapping at you but this storm and my car are getting on my nerves.

Ok.. Im gonna throw out some ideas about what I think it could be.. hopefully something will stick:

- Maybe your timing is massively retarded?
- 02 sensors (when cats overheart, could ruin 02 sensor, leading directly to your misfiring.
- You need to have someone else check your cats.. either way, I think this is a problem. Im almost positive you have some sort of blockage or restriction in your exhaust system.

Hope this helps.

Wouldn't the 02 sensor set off the check engine light?

Agree with some of the other diagnosis. Either Clogged/partially obstructed cats (normally when they glow red,, something is clogging them) or your timing is wayyyy off Also, you may want to consider changing the distributor cap and rotor since you did new plugs as well. Double check your spark plug wires to make sure there are no breaks, or one is noe grounded. Possible you may have gotten a bad wire in the new bunch.

same thing like this happened to me and my gf's cressida like two years ago. once we took it to the shop and have the cats taken out and swap to straight pipe, changed the distributor cap and rotor, then wires and spark plug. runs like a champ now. its been two years now.

Just wanted to give everyone an update and solution to my problem. It turned out the coil pack on the driver's side went out. I thought they had changed both packs, but it turned out they only replaced the one on top of the engine. Changed pack and again things are back to normal.
