Unhappy car stalls at stop lights

Hello to all; New member here,
in happy possession of a 92 ls 400, since joining have been encouraged by all of you to keep and maintain my LS to perfection. First I must fix my small probs that prevent me from driving in confidence.

here goes: after idling car drives fine. without warning (ie sitting at a stop light, or at take off) car just dies and i get the red dash of stall. so I sit there and restart x 2 or 3 finally car starts but sputters, all the while blowing carbon/black smoke out the exhaust.

possible solution: change distributors and rotors (spark plugs/wires were changed, but could not locate distributors/rotors).

question: could this be true or should my quest to solve be further researched?

I don't know what it is exactly, but you have a bigger problem than distributor and plug wires. My guess is one of the sensors is bad or going bad. Like the idle sensor, etc.

Take it to AutoZone and ask them to check the error codes. That might tell you where the problem is.

THE SAME EXACT THING HAPPENED TO ME! We replaced the Air Intake Sensor and everything was fine. Over $1000,00 at LEXUS'S COST but I got mine from a junkyard for $200.00!

your MAF aka Mass Air Flow sensor will nver go bad unless you pull some stupid stunt with it whiling fixing your car... like turning the unit upside down or putting pressure on the sensor itself... if you have worked on the car prior to this.. then you might have teh MAF sensor problem

I've done teh same....

If check engine is on.. run a self check using a paper clip or jumper wires... the self diagnosis box is in one teh engine compartment by the egr sensor etc... you should be able to find it..

then link TE1 to E1 .. i dont remember the name by memory.. i just remember the position....

Then turn the ignition till your instrument cluster turns on.... if done correctly.. O/D will flash and check engine will flash codes... for example.... it flashes twice at a slow rate then 5 more times at a fast rate..

it means code 25..

if this is complicated i'm sure you can go to autozone and have them run a computer on it.. if they have the adapter..

this is... after all... if your check engine light is on

Ok, this intrigued me to remember an issue I have had with my '95 LS400. After prolonged freeway driving (At least over an hour) when comming to a stop at an exit, the car will sometimes silently stall. I don't often notice it until I go to hit the gas and .... nothing. It does restart easily though. no smoke or anything. I had an exhaust leak fixed about a year ago that I thought could be the culprit, but obviously isn't. This would the simply the most hideous thing for a dealer to figure out, since it is virtually irreproducible. :-( Any ideas?

Oh, and I have 125,000 miles and have not done the 120 service yet. Will be before the end of the year, as soon as I have the time to handle it.

Thank you.

get the service done, if you havent, you need to change the timing belt, water pump, tensior (possibly) at that mileage.... plugs, wires, dist caps and rotors... till your isnt fully tunedup, it gives teh dealer a better excuse to charge you mroe money for repairs and diagnosis.. because that'll be the first thing they say
