So here's my dilemma. I bought my '93 LS400 a month or so ago. Haven't really drove it other then to get smogged. It's had this shifter/starting problem and it drives me crazy and I wont drive the car in fear I'll get stuck somewhere. When I come to start the car sometimes it will start normal. But now more and more often I find myself messing around with the shifter because it seems the car isnt registering that the car is in park so it wont start. I often have to have the car about halfway between park and reverse or try starting it in neutral with the shifter halfway between nuetral and drive or reverse. So far all I've done was take apart the center woodtrim around the shifter and looked around but I'm not sure what I'm looking for. Any ideas? Is this a common problem?
the switch can actually be taken apart and metal contacts cleaned, if memory serves me right. most likely there is carbon build up in the switch that is preventing your car from starting.
