why do you want to remove the DRL?

havent tried it but you COULD try to get rid of them by removing the DRL2 relay from engine room junction box.

Personally I like my DRLs. They make the car look newer.

People dont pull out infront of me as much as they used to in my previous car.

I don't like DRLs I think they're icky! haha

But I can understand how they boost safety. Would removing the DRL relay cause the high beams to stop working? Aren't the DRLs just the high beams running at a low wattage?

Its to raises awareness on the road, so that motorists who drive with one eye on the road and the other Texting on their phone, sipping on coffe and massaging their left leg could see you better.
I dont like it eaither. But I dont have it on my 98.

Yes, removing this relay WILL cause your high beams to stop working. My HIDs work so well that I seldom even reach for the highbeams. I'm not a fan of DRLs so I yanked this relay soon after I got the car.

One thing that really rocks is, when using the high beams, the low beams are still on, unlike many other cars.
Lighting is very good on back roads with both of them being on. Plus the car just looks sick.

With HIDs and standard High beam lighting, the headlights look wicked on the back road. Its like a color variation that does it justice. I put the Silverstar Ultras in my highs recently and they do not do as well because the colors match to much.

has anyone been able to disable their DRL and keep the hight beam operational?

I really dont want the DRL, My car is big and white, no problem seeing it coming.

I think it looks terible with the dim yellow high beam during the day.

I have a manual that says

If the parking brake is released, the signal is input to terminal 4 of the relay. this activates the relay and current from MAIN fuse flows to DRL NO. 2 relay to H-LP L UPR fuse to Bla Bla Bla Bla .......causing the headlight to light up dimmer than normal brightness.

So............

I beleive the Parking Brake Switch is a green wire that goes to the DRL main relay. If I were to snip that, or put it on a switch. would that make the relay think I never took the car out of park?

it's funny. people who don't have DRL wish they had DRL and the people who have DRL wish they didn't have it.

i have a '98 so DRL didn't come standard for that year like the '99 and '00 did. i personally like it but i can also live without it. either way, i'm one of those guys you see on the road with their low beams and foglights on during the day so DRL wouldn't really apply to me anyways. it's definitely a good safety feature nonetheless plus it looks cool from far away. it'll keep you guessing what car it is till it gets closer and closer.

If you want DRL on your 98 LS, I'm quite sure that the $40 Webelectric DRL-2P kit ( http://www.webelectricproducts.com/ ) could be adapted to make your your turn signals function as DRL's although you might have to modify the kit by lengthening some of its wires. I recently installed the kit on my wife's 2012 Prius van/wagon and I don't see why it wouldn't work on your 98 LS. Here is a video I put on Youtube showing how our Prius turn signals work as DRL:

To the OP: There have been past threads showing exactly which wire under the dash can be cut to eliminate the DRL on the 99-00 LS400. I could likely find it but you can too by searching. But why disable DRL? Beginning in 2012, DRL is (finally) required on new vehicles in all EC (European Community) countries due to its documented benefits.

FYI, DRLs are standard in canada for a long time now so if you can get a hold of a wiring diagram to show canadian specs it will show how to add it, mind you it make take a few relays and extra harnesses.

i've seen a 95-97 with OEM DRLs, looked decent with the lower high beam portion at half wattage.

maybe I should try different bulbs.

I just think they look like garbage. nasty yellow dim light in a bright white LED world.
