LS400 windshield wipers and steering wheel noise
Hi all,
I just test drove a 2000 LS400 Millenium Edition (not sure what denotes this Millenium Edition but some people claim that it is the Platinum Edition of the USA).
Anyways, the windshield wipers when running, when they return to their normal position, they seem to go down too far and they hit something, making a thud sound and it can be felt through the steering wheel and car. This can't be normal. Is this a known problem?
Also, the windshield wipers on the 2000 LS400 don't have a hiding feature where when you use it, then it moves upwards to expose itself?
Finally, the steering wheel moves down when the key is inserted. However when the key is taken back out, the steering wheel retracts with a really loud motor noise and in one single direction (moves inward and upward at the same time) compared to when the key is initially put in (it then moves downwards then outwards). Is this noise normal?
Thanks guys for your replies.

Here is a link to a thread where I posted three TSIBs on steering colume issues: https://www.clublexus.com/forums/sho...highlight=tilt
My 2000 LS400 was built after the fixes were implemented at the factory (about 205 from the end of the LS400 model run) and the steering wheel column is virtually silent as it moves.
The wiper blade arms are easily adjusted - I think I saw detailed adjustment instructions recently in my repair manual set. My wipers are adjusted a little too low according to the specs, but they are almost completely hidden by the hood when they are parked.
My Platinum Series 2000 LS400 has light maple wood and textured instead of smooth leather - I use the term "lizard skin" to describe it. Does this sound like your Millenium Edition?

As for the TSBs, those aren't recalls so it would cost money to get those done unless I could do a fix myself?
Also, the car feels really big compared to my ES300 and the suspension quite a bit more "floaty". Would lowering it be feasible to help make the car more sporty? I'm sure it'll lower the floaty, comfortable ride though.

Assuming Canada uses the same TSIB numbering scheme, you could likely call a Lexus dealer to ask about prices. A coworker with a 99 LS has an intermittent steering colume noise/jerkiness issue - I think he said that he was quoted $1,400 to fix it.
The "SF" represents one of the three versions of the 2000 LS400 Platinum Series. I previously posted details about the three versions in this thread --> https://www.clublexus.com/forums/sho...light=Platinum
BTW, not all Platinum LS400s were monotone. Mine is Crystal White with silver lower cladding.
You will find lots of opinions on this forum about the effects of lowering LS400s. I agree that the ride is "floaty" on both our current 2000 LS and the 1990 LS400 we had for almost 14 years -- but it would really p1ss off the wife if I modified the suspension and hardened up the ride -- been there, done that.

Merry Christmas guys!
I have another question. I tested the CD changer in the glovebox and found that the glovebox was very warm when I opened it. Could anyone with the CD changer tell me if their glovebox is warm when opened (the top glovebox with the CD changer inside)?
Thanks.
