Default dead shocks

Heres the deal, I have a 91 LS400 207,000 miles, I recently put on stock 95 16's with 225/60/16 tires, my problem is that EVERY little bump I hit the tires kisses the splash gaurd, my thing is this, I know I need shocks, but do I need springs too? and if I need shocks what do I go with, Tokico or KYB? and where can I get some springs from at a good price. thx..

gotta search next time but since i just got em replaced i'll help u out, go with KYB and H&R sport springs. the springs u can get at Tire Rack and make sure CL gets the credit! for springs, u can just find them at a parts shop you trust and know have the cheapest price.

I think he meant shocks here. The KYB's are a very good choice to go with,, IMO the Tokicos are too soft and I personally blew out 2 sets in under 4 months. If you do go with lowering springs,, you will also have to lower the profile of your tires as well. You will have to change you tires from a 60 profile to a 50 profile if you wanna keep them. I had the exact same setup and when I installed my lowering springs,, the car woudl rub over bumps and at highway speed,, not a good feeling. This info only applies if you are doing a LOWERING SPRING!!!!

Go with OE-replacement KYB shocks for the OE ride.

PD if he stays at stock height, he will be fine with the tire size. Ths is what I was running on my 92 b4 I put the lowering springs on. Car will actually look lower with the full tire. If he adds on a lowering spring then he will have to drop down to a 50 profile tire.

Speedo is actually still on point, maybe only 1 or 2 mph off.

Try irontoad.com or l-turnedparts.com. Most online shops have the KYB-GR2, which is not stock spec (10% stiffer ride), even though the OEM shock is a KYB as well. Those 2 places I listed will have OEM shocks, with the toyota stamp. I just ordered a full set for my 99 LS.

Are you really in need of springs?? When you bounce on the corners of the car does it bottom out(hit the top of the shock,, thunking noise)? Is it easy to push down on the corners of the car? If this is the case then you definately need shocks. The KYB-GR2's are a good aftermarket and are pretty close to stock. Even though factory shocks are KYB's as well, the GR2's are not factory spec.(but very close). You can get them at just about any autoparts store. It has been my experience that Pepboys keeps them in stock, even for our cars.
As far as springs,, when you push down on the corners of the car or even the center of the car (bounce test), and you get the car to bouncing, does it continue to do so after you stop applying pressure? If so,, springs are shot. If not, just change the shocks and roll on.

Your tire size is fine, and you do not have to change the tires at all if you are gonna stay at stock height. The factory tires for the 91 is 215/60/15 ( i think,, dont quote me exactly on this, but definately a 15" rim). At 225/60/16 your tires are essentially 1" overall too big for factory spec for that year. I ran the same setup on my 92 until I lowered my car. There were times when I would hit the splash guard over speed bumps. It is only a small amount of rub so nothing to worry about. Bottom line,, you are kissing the guard b/c the tires, while they will work, are essentially 1" overall to big for the car's factory spec.

The stock tire size on my 91 LS is 205/65-15. Running a 225/55-16 results in 1% too slow (speedo shows 60 mph when actually 60.6 mph). Running a 225/60-16 is 4.5% too slow (speedo shows 60 mph when actually 62.7 mph)

Tire / Diameter
205/65-15 / 25.5 in
225/55-16 / 25.7 in
225/60-16 / 26.6 in
