Chugging after highway driving
My '92 LS is giving me fits. It runs fine in the city and fine on the highway. But, when I drive it for a while on the highway and then slow down, it starts acting like it's not getting any gas, and chugs. Sometimes the engine revs slightly when it does this. I've had it die on me in traffic, but it always re-starts.
I just had the car in for its 150,000 mile service, and when I told them of this problem, they said they couldn't do anything about it unless they experienced it. But even if they experience it, how are they going to know what to do? I've told them what happens. Isn't that enough?
This is an annoying and sometimes dangerous situation. I don't know what to do. One mechanic told me it could be the idle air control. Another said it could be the master airflow sensor. I suppose we could just start replacing parts until we find it, but that could get expensive!
Ideas?
Thanks,
Rupe

Didn't find much
I saw one thread where someone had a bad fuse that they replaced, but otherwise everything was pretty vague as to what they did.
Lexus has told me they can't diagnose if they can't experience it. But even if they experience it, it will be on the road where they have no diagnostic equipment, so what good is that?
I'm frustrated as can be. I can't get it fixed or even diagnosed.

IAC valve
I called a shop that specializes in Toyota and Lexus. They said they have had a rash of issues like mine this summer since it's been so hot and humid. It seems to be the idle air control (IAC) valve. He said they get moisture built up in them and clog up. He also said it just likely needs a good cleaning, but Lexus dealers won't clean it - they will only replace it for $500 - whereas it can be cleaned for $120.
I'll try the $120 option first and see what happens.

Chugging after highway driving
My 93 ls400 did the same thing plus the TRAC light came on. My auto mechanic replaced the mass flow meter and all of the O2 sensors. Problem solved but cost me $2,300.00. Ouch! My gas mileage increased consideraly too.

I would have gone with a salvage MAF sensor for a lot less.

You may want a free engine code scanning at Autozone. Keep in mind that a bad MAF sensor does not always show up a code at scanning.
I bought an MAF sensor for another car before. The new one from discount dealer was $500. I got a used one from car-part.com for $35 and it worked.
Good luck.

Sorry about that last post, its one of those 'bad days' for me.
Mashan, deosn't Autozone only scan ODB2 vehicles? Mines a 94, the year before they switched over I believe. Which ticked me off, I have an ODB2 scanner for my last vehicles.
