Wink Door Panel Modifications..

I really don't know how the final project is going to turn out, but I already started hacking up my door panels so I can fit 7" mids in my doors. Maybe 8" later.

Here's what the door panel looks like stock:

That tiny 4" grill just isn't going to cut it! The mounting depth in the doors isn't much, so I NEEDED to modify these panels to get some speaker clearance.

Well, I cut up the panels, and inserted an MDF ring, and fiberglassed it up and used some bondo to get a flush/smooth surface on the top.

Semi assembled:

With a grill:

Yeah, the grill sticks out a bit. Its not going to be black, I'm going to wrap it up with grillcloth and the grill will have a nice vinyl trim line.. When I'm all done.. ofcourse it wont look OEM, becuase there will be a huge grill that will obviously catch the eye.. but hopefully, it wont be an eyesore, and will match the rest of the interior.

I'm going to be reupholstering the entire door panel. New leather, new vinyl, everything. The vinyl sure is not goign to be fun to work with! But I think the combination of new vinyl and new leather will make the doors look much newer.

You didn't get your toes in a few shots. On pictures like that, it helps if you raise a leg up to get at least part of your foot in the shot.

Looks good so far - and you got the panel off without breaking anything I was not so lucky in the past.

Hahah wow. Atleast I didn't get my belly

I'm practicing the reupholstering the vinyl right now.. it sure is tough. I went to an upholstery shop and had them order some vinyl for me that will match. I hope it stretches better than the cheap stuff I'm using to practice with.

Here's mine that I finished yesterday

I gotta do driver side now, It's a 6" driver.

Gonna do more sanding to smooth out the FG, than I'll be doing some bondo. Gonna probably cover it with grey vinyl.

Also it's a bolt on, so If i ever decide I wanna make a new enclosure I can just unbolt it and take it off.

That looks pretty good. I didn't want to mount my speaker to my door panel, otherwise I would have gone that route. How are you going to keep your panel from vibrating like crazy? Its cool that you get to aim your driver towards you though..

I've deadened the door panel with Rammat and some Ensolite foam material. Sending 150 rms to that speaker, great midbass and no rattles at all.

Yeah I'm using a roll of Raammat for just both my front doors, and I bought a ton of ensolite.. Are you running an active setup? What driver is that?

Nice. How do you like the NX30s? I hear they can be crossed LOW. I may try them out if I don't like the Seas Neos i picked up.

Yup. I want to try the neos . I've crossed the NX30's down to 1.6khz @ 24db and they still sounded great, but for my setup I have them at 2.5kz @ 24db since the morels can play u to 5khz (and down to 30hz ) and still have a pretty flat response. I got the NX30's for $60 so I can't really complain . I was running the LPG 25 FNA (sp?) before the NX30s, now those are some good quality budget drivers. Great for the money, but I wouldn't switch back anytime soon.

You further solidify why a person needs at least a second car to life this life.
