If the MAF sensor is no good then it can potentially make the car run bad and even shut off at times bcose it affects the way the fuel and air are mixed. Sometimes you can just take it out and clean it, there is a tutorial around here somewhere just search. Is your check engine light on? smelling gas can either mean you have a leak somewhere under the hood or your car is running rich and not burning all the full. Either one is not good so you need to make sure.

Well, disconnect the MAF, and see if its running better. I find that 1st gen LS runs almost perfect with MAF disconnected, except for check engine light and occasional ping.
The problem that you are describing sound like a dead ignition coil. There are two of them, and the one on the drivers side usually fails, and then your car is running on 4 cylinders, and gas from the other 4 is dumped into the exaust. You can buy an aftermarket ignition coil for $60 on rockauto.com and it's an easy replacement for a sunny weekend morning.

I once knew someone with a GS that just stalled. Would not turn over for nothing and behaved as if it was starving for gas. Needless to say ,after a $300 tow, $300.00 fuel pump and other items, his car had a very small piece of debris stuck on the sensor wire inside the MAF which tricked the computer into believe their was no incoming air. Cleaned it up real good with the some carb cleaner and it ran perfect .
I clean mine after every oil change.

Sorry to hear, the MAF is like $1000, and seems you've just wasted that. The ignition is easy to find, just follow the ignition wires. One is right on top of the engine, but thats not likely to be the one that failed, its probably the other one, its on the drivers side, kind of hidden there. Just follow the ignition wire.

Too bad you didn't ask if anyone had a MAF. I have a spare one off my old 93 SC400 complete with actual AFM casing. If I recall, it is the same 1UZ-FE. I would have let you try it out and even buy it real cheap if it worked. Anyway, I'm surprised you haven't thown a check engine light being you are running that rich.

What you are calling a MAF is actually a Karmann Vortex generator in an LS400. This is a type of MAF.
The sensor creates vortexes (mini tornados) in the airflow and counts them. As the airflow increases the number of vortexes increases.
Treat it carefully!!!
---------------------------------------------
Here for the record is how a MAF works:
A MAF heats an element with electrical current, as air passes around the element it cools it off. The rate of cooling of the element allows the MAF to determine how much air is entering the engine.
There are two basic element types: Hot Film and Hot Wire
GM MAF sensors produce a digital frequency signal, most other MAF’s produce an analog signal.
