My local dealer salesman told me they are getting in a low-milage good condition 1990 LS. I am probably going to buy it (for a collector or for my son).
Are there any things I should be aware of before buying a 1st Gen LS. Are there any common defects or problem areas? Is there some part of the car I should look at to make sure it is in good condition as he says?
Is the LS really as great as I read? Is it worth keeping it in the garage as a collector since it the first model year Lexus? How great is the car really from an owner's perspective?

An LS is a great car, but cannot be compared with the Newer Lexus' you own. Although the LS is an amazing ride, you just simply can’t compare it with cars 15 years ahead.
Collector? Probably not, since there are so many of them out there. The least model sold was the 98-2000 generation.

I think the LS is a great car from what I have been reading as well. I will be buying one very soon. I want a 1995 and up. The 1990 in my opinion is not particularly a collectible unless you are a die hard Lexus fan and have one of all the generations for display purposes. I'd surely consider a 1994 before a 1990 as a driver. I think the only loss is the leather headliner. No big loss for me.

I wonder why. The 98-00 are awesome models, that's when they first introduced the 290hp engine in the LS if I am correct. Maybe people were still so satisfied with their 90-94 and 95-97 generations that they didn't see the need for a new one. Who knows?

That was probably a factor. When someone owns a car that looks and works very well, they tend to hang on to them. Look at the cars for sale on ebay. Certain model cars that are known to be problematic are for sale in huge numbers as opposed to the great cars that are hardly offered for sale. Another factor could be that people who bought an 1990 LS may have replaced it for a 1995 LS 2nd Gen and then they may have felt that the car still looks the same for the 1998-2000 generation and bought something else for the sake of change. I mean a 1990-2000 LS for a non-Lexus person all look very similar - very subtle exterior changes for the untrained eye. The cars look fresher as time went by, yet the cahnges were more evolutionary than revolutionary, from an appearance point of view.
