Default My first post.. anyone ever done 98 engine and trans on 97 down?

I was wondering if anyone ever fitted the 1uzfe 290HP with the 5speed tranny on the 95 year lexus in my case...

I am thinking on doing this conversion some day as the 5 speed is great. I might end up putting an LS6 (GM) engine in there with 450HP with heads and headers using stock cam to keep the car quiet.

BUt a 290HP 5speed should be direct fit.. only change computer and harnessess should bolt right in???

Anyone ever done it?

I was talking about this same swap with Todd a few weeks back, doable. He has a V-8 and tranny from a '98 GS and since that project got pulled, I was tempted to learn what this may do for the older LS's. Just have to find the engine, tranny and harness and get into it.

Given the $$ to performance ratio, there are other avenues to pursue for a lower cost. Port polish, headers, forged pistons, stroked... This project insterests me but it is doubtful I'd do such a thing to mine.

A guy on the Cressida forum came across one Cressida owner who dropped in an LS1 into his MX62 80-84 Cressida.

There were several 95-97 LS400 with 98 engine and tranny . Some I saw on E-bay, some even in this news group. It appears it is direct replacement into old body. You also need 98 ECU .

i disagree... a 5speed auto is not replaceable with aftermarket mods...

where are those headers you are talking about that fit the ls? I haven't seen one.... if I ever find one, i would do the swap....

I'm not understanding what are you disagreeing to?

You had stated a VVTi and tranny swap...okay. I'm commenting that for the cost, working over the non-VVTi will yield some very good gains for the 95-97. If you are asking which tranny is the nicer component, the 5SPD.

For a stock swap 98 VVTi and tranny to a equal cost built non-VVTi with 4spd, I feel the ratio goes toward the 95-97. IMO. YMMV

The headers would be a one-off project that you'd have to approach a competent shop to build.

Question at what cost

at what cost?

the 98 ECU is probably a G.
and the 5-speed tranny is most likely from a wrecked LS,
still expensive though.

I'm still thinking about the $$ to HP ratio.
Someone tell me why a 5spd auto is better than the standard four?

I don't think anyone here has done it. THe main change was the addttion of VVTi to the 4.0, which was the reason for the power increase.
The 1997 GS 300 used the 1998 5 speed found in the next gen GS/LS/SC 400s. So the older cars should be able to use the tranny with no problem.

As you stated, its mostly computer adjustments.

Lets talk about it . Engine mounts are the same. While engine control will be supported by new engine harness. There could be some changes in the rest of ECU that could make the swap very difficult. Any ideas? How about 2004 GS430 and 98 GS400? Those cars use identical body/features. The only difference is the engine.
