No, I stood outside of the garage with the door closed and did my crystal ball act. Of course I was under the car and no they are not clamped on and no they are not welded. It appears that they are compressed by an inner ring with "nubs" on them that squeeze on to the pipe itself.
hey man, relax. There are a lot of people on this forum that dont bother to check for themselves and ask before looking. I didnt mean it as an insult. And that description that you give is similar to my 91 LS. What most 1st gen owners do is cut them off. The length of the tailpipe including the tips is around 8-9 inches. That being said, most aftermarket tips are 7-8 inches I believe. So if you were to cut them off, you should be safe when putting an aftermarket tip on.
