Default Advice on scan tool

I am looking into which scan tool I should get. I am tired of going to the auto parts store to get codes read/erased, eventhough its not often. I own a 98 LS400, 05 LS430, and a 00 LX470. I definitely want to be able to read ABS and SRS codes. I want to stay away from subscription services and costly scanners.

i have a very old generic scanner i bought in autozone and it gets me by but i'm sure there are better scanners today.

some things to note:
- i would stay away from bluetooth scanners (also to avoid subscription, not always). get wired ones that runs power off the OBD port.
- just like anything automotive, your budget will dictate the features but most OBD-II scanners should be able to do most of the general code reading/clearing including ABS/SRS.

if you want techstream-like scanners, that will be more but you will be able to do more as it's toyota specific.

what's your budget?

I have a super cheap bluetooth ELM327 scanner, works great for my 98 LS400. Can monitor stuff realtime, clear codes, etc. Generic apps on your phone to interface with it are free (if you ignore their popups).

Not sure if it interfaces with SRS system, I've never tried.

I was looking to spend no more than $150, but if I have to spend more I will. I want a unit that reads ABS and SRS codes. I currently have the SRS light flashing on one of my vehicles.

Unfortunately it does not read SRS code

In that ClubLexus thread about advice on scan tools, a lot of members go deep into which OBD‑II scanners are worth buying for diagnosing 1st and 2nd gen Lexus LS models - from simple code readers that pull basic P0 codes to more advanced Bluetooth/OBD adapters that work with apps capable of reading Lexus‑specific systems. People often recommend affordable Bluetooth adapters combined with apps that show live data and freeze frame info, because it’s much easier than guessing what your check engine light means. Some even mention how aftermarket scan tools can help clear codes after repairs, saving trips to the dealer. (clublexus.com) On a totally different note, if you ever need to send documents while you’re out wrenching or troubleshooting, an android fax solution like https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...p.app&hl=en_US lets you scan and send paperwork right from your phone without a computer.

I had a phone app (forget which one) and the ELM bluetooth OBDII gizmo and it would not give me any ABS codes for a Ford truck I have. I am now thinking that generic code readers are not enough for these codes and that the only way to get the ABS and SRS codes is probably a Toyota-level OEM-type scan tool.

The Zurich ZR11S from Harbor Freight reads ABS codes. The Innova 5610 reads ABS and SRS codes, and live data. There are other less expensive Innova code readers that read ABS codes. I still do not know which route to take.
