Default 94 LS 400 Gauge cluster

Cluster was acting up so I sent it in to get fixed, came back and took 10 minutes with heater on before it would function fully.
I’ve read somewhere that this was a common problem, but what can I do to fix? Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you.

Sounds like the failing capacitor causing the problem. I'd find the failing one(s) using a soldering iron as is the photo shown at the number 3 here.

Thank you Yamae, I’ve read hundreds of your posts on this website, I appreciate your response.
The cap that your soldering iron is sitting on is the one I should replace, correct? I’ve read that opening up the cluster can be a challenge and will I need any special tools to do this?
Once again, thank you

In my experience getting the cluster out of the car is by far the biggest pain. If you have really big hands and/or bad dexterity - good luck. Opening it up once out is simple in my experience with no special tools other than what you will have in your toolbox, but you have to be VERY careful as the needles and motors are extremely delicate and obviously any plastic connectors are old and brittle at this point. This is based on experience being inside a few of these clusters.

Default Cluster

Thank you 99, I agree the cluster is no fun to remove. If you can see the pic Yamae sent, to you agree this is the cap I should replace? Thank you again

I have to defer to Yamae (the ultimate guru of this forum) and others on the caps unfortunately. I haven’t replaced caps on one of these clusters yet. Just have swapped needle/motor assemblies with working ones and added needle stops for sticky needles. What I have heard from a very experienced professional rebuilder of clusters is that he does not replace all the caps, and it’s a small subset that are actually worth proactively replacing. If you search this forum I think they have been previously identified. Sorry can’t be more specific.

Please view this tutorial. There are several you should check and replace:
