I have just aquired a 96 LS 400 with 94K miles. My question concerns the idle speed at startup. The engine seems to be racing at about 1500 rpm at start-up but settles down to around 750rpm after a few minutes. Is this normal for a '96? The car has been smogged and passes with flying colors. also just had all new plugs installed. Should I have them check the cold idle speed?

No, it's fine in my opinion. Mine idles in the range of 1400 or so and then settles down to about 600.

I wouldn't worry. Mine starts out around 1200-1400 in the cold and quickly settles down to around 600-700.
