Close call.
lol "for some reason"
i remember seeing an old video podcast episode from the youtube channel DRIVE or whatever it was called, and matt farah was talking about the new 2013 GT500 press car he was given to drive on a track somewhere... and he was saying that even with all the electronic aids still on it would pull off these huge prolonged drifts! i think the video was called 10 cars that want to kill you, or something like that

Yes many cars will blow through the traction\stability control. I've driven a few which are like this. #1 on my list is W204 C63 AMG. Would blow through the traction control and allow you to get quite sideways before it stepped in. I frankly loved the calibration of the systems on that car. The other way to "view" it is, the systems allow you to have some fun before they reign you in. Farah knows what he's talking about though, so I'd imagine that GT500 wasn't exactly a precision instrument with precise electronic systems.
As for the ABS\tire screeching.I have also seen compilations of usually older cars (90's 2000's) locking up their wheels completely. That does happen. Either through bad brakes or failing modules or who knows what. However, it's possible to have the tires screech and make a lot of noise even when ABS is being triggered. The tires sort of "sound" like they lock up, and while it's not a shrill screech like a true lockup, they still make a good bit of noise.
I think the customers do it to themselves tbh. The Mustang has independent rear suspension now and yet people still send those ****ing things into crowds. I think it's the combo of high horsepower car + inexperienced driver, which because it's cheap, means many of the drivers are.

Glad you're OK. Also, glad you didn't get nailed from behind. If that would have been down here in South Florida, you most likely would have. It would of been by either someone following too close, or some idiot who is paying more attention to their cell phone (or doing both at the same time).
None of us are perfect, and even the best driver can still get into an accident because other people do unimaginable crazy sh..! Ever see someone try to make a 90 degree right hand turn on Interstate 95, to cross 5 lanes of traffic because they didn't want to miss their exit, even though the next exit was less than a 1/4 mile away. As they crossed (perpendicular to the traffic), they saw the cars coming, panicked, then stopped right in the middle. This happened in the middle of the day.
The best driving advice my stepfather gave me was, your main attention shouldn't be on the vehicle directly in front of you. It should be focused and scanning several vehicles ahead so you can react sometimes even before the guy in front of you does. Never stay behind a vehicle you can't see past, be extra cautious on hills where you can't see over the crest (also works when trying to avoid the police using laser guns- they love them hills, lol). Also, for those that don't know, and apparently there are a lot as evidenced by all the people I see do it, never continously run side by side next to an 18 wheeler on the highway. It has nothing to do with him not seeing you (which he probably can't). It has to do with the tires. Depending on the load, there is enough force during a blowout to shatter your window and send small pieces of glass, rubber, steel threads, at your face or worse (not to mention scare the blank out of you). Think of it as a ticking time bomb that's about 5 feet from your skull and has enough force to fracture it. Another thing about all 18 wheelers and large trucks- don't stay behind them on the highway. Besides all the rock chips you get on your paint and windshield, if you happen to rearend them, its quite easy to get decapitated in lower cars (please look at the youtube videos of cars going under trailers). The thing most people forget, you may be paying attention and be able to stop, but the guy behind you can hit you with enough force to knock you under. My family owned a large trucking company, so we had experience with what happens. I think that's why I had to learn how to drive a tractor-trailer before I was allowed to learn how to drive a car. I've also worked in an ER long enough to see what bad drivers can do to you good drivers.
The last thing I'll add to reinforce what kills most, not all, people in car accidents is the second impact. It's not the impact of the 2 cars colliding. Your body will continue to travel after that initial impact. Whatever it is in your vehicle that stops your body from continuing to travel is the 2nd impact. Hopefully, that's the seatbelt. The 1st thing the ER trauma doctors and nurses will ask the paramedics when a person, involved in a severe accident, is brought in (usually they are unconscious or in shock), is, was the person restrained? WHY? Because if the person was restrained, the hospital, will know more or less where the persons injuries are and can start treating the person sooner. There is no telling where the injuries may be on an unrestrained person because it's not known what part or parts of the vehicle the body has struck. It's precious time wasted in trying to diagnose what's wrong.
The best thing about using seatbelts in a Lexus LS400? They help to hold you in your slippery seat during emergency menouvers. I don't want to be fighting to stay in my seat AND trying to avoid an accident at the same time. Statistics show most people have better control of their vehicle when they are secured in a seat.
