Default Low dust brake pads?

Hi guys,

Anyone has experience with low dust brake pads for the LS400 (ufc21). Any recommendations?

Low dust
Low noise
Good feel
Strong performance
Heat\fade resistance
Affordable purchase price

Pick, at best, 3.

Best results seem to come from OEM, or, Akebono ACT's.

I currently have 2 of each on my car, I've never noticed any brake dust buildup. Our style rims don't ever really show it.

On my '98 the ACT's eliminated that super sensitive brake feel that the car originally had. The OEM pads made the LS feel like my old '63 Pontiac Bonneville (or any 1960's GM land yacht) - lightly touch the brakes and it would throw you thru the windshield.

Interesting. I never had that before or after. I've always felt the brake pedal on my car was very progressive with lots of modulation at the top of the pedal, with a natural linear ramp up as you get deeper into it.

It's not grabby, not like modern and certainly not like sports cars are. I've driven >50 cars (sports cars and friends cars) in my life, so I like to think my experience and opinion is quite broad in this manner. Very few have as soft of a pedal as (my) 400 does.

OE pads are the best WITH the factory multi-piece shim kit. They haven't made a squeak or squeal and provide very modular stopping power that's linear and predictable. I had some Japanese Sumitomo rear pads I purchased along with the Beck Arnley Premiums (Sangsin is what they gave me on RockAuto) and the rear pads would squeal like crazy.

I did get lucky and found a freshly wrecked LS that had factory OE Lexus everything for the brakes recently redone though, otherwise it probably would've cost me $500 or more for the brake job instead of $50.

i second or third vote the akebono ACTs. had great results and use them on all my cars, even my SUVs, with minimal brake dust with decent bite. it doesn't bite like OE pads but i can live with that compromise of low brake dust.

i also vote akebono ceramic pads (ACT665 for front and ACT613 for rear)

they work great, but being ceramic take getting a bit of heat in them before they really start to bite... it's slightly noticeable on the first few stops when everything's cold but nothing that would cause concern

otherwise they're quiet and virtually dust free as advertised (and reported lol)

Never heard of akebono. Not sure either if I can get them here.

Have found stoptech pads at one of my suppliers though, they're not to expensive either. Might give them a try I think

The car is sensitive to brake hardware - I'd caution against going outside of the traveled path, it's common to have squealing issues. Especially going to Stoptech who sell a lot of sport\performance brakes.

I'd really recommend trying to source OEM or Akebono first.

FWIW, I haven't loved the Akebono's. They are low dust, yes, but they squeal a lot. Only at the first stop, but still. I re-bed the front, then the back started squealing. I re-bed the back, then the front started squealing again. I'm ready to switch.

My Akebono's haven't made any noise since I put them on. None, zero.

What condition are your rotors in? What about the shims? Those play a big role in anti-squeal too.

I also vote for OEM. No noticeable dust on my LS and they last a really really long time if you are gentle driver (> 75,000 + miles on my LS430). Quiet, good stopping power, not grabby, etc.

i sometimes get a squeal on the very first stop if it's been humid out, but then totally quiet the rest of the drive

when it's time to do the E55 brakes i'm def putting the akebonos in, those calipers are huge (8 piston, 4 pads total) and the wheels have a thin spoke sporty design so dust can become a problem much quicker lol

I imagine if the car has been sitting for longer it's worse? Rust on the rotors, rubbing off. It just is what it is, you can't fight mother nature
