Hi! I have spent a ton of time in the wheel and tire threads and I am having a hard time in regards to the setup I want to run.
I am getting BC coilovers installed later this month. This is a daily and I don't want to slam it, just want to adjust for wheel gap and run big wheels. I am looking for purchase wheels and tires. I really need some help here.
The wheels I want are 20x10.5 +40mm offset in the rears, and 20x9 +35 offset for the fronts. First, does this seem possible? Will I run into any issues?
Second, my understanding is tire stretch is not good for a daily driver. So the rears being 10.5's, a 265 tire is only 10.43 inches. Do I need to run a 275? Would that be an issue?
Third, is the same concerns with tire width. The fronts being 9's, a 235 tire is only 9.25 inches.
Finally, will I need to do trimming/rolling on this setup?
I really need help from a wheel and tire expert on all of this. Thank you in advance.
first, what model year LS do you have? 1st gen 90-94 have less clearance than 2nd gen 95-00 models. i hope you have a 2nd gen bc 20s on a 1st will be donk-tastic!
it is important to keep in mind that 2nd gens have bigger/wider front brake calipers so you will have to consider clearance for them. wheel offset does NOT alone determine if it will clear the calipers. what exact wheels are you considering to get? wheel pad and spoke design have a big factor in clearance.
as for tire, minor stretch is fine for a daily. I ran stretched but it all depends on your preferences; looks over comfort/practicality. only how low you are willing to go will determine if you will need your fenders trimmed/rolled.
with your proposed sizes, i don't think a 20x10.5 +40 will fit (let alone a wheel company would make such an odd size) unless you are getting custom wheels. a 10.5 +35 will fit in the rear (barely)! 20x9 +35 will be fine up front (assuming they clear the front calipers to begin with).
hard to tell if these wheels will clear the caliper just by looking at them. i usually can tell from a rear view, but wheel makers rarely show the mounting pad of the wheel and asanti is no different.
here is my 97 (same body as your 95) when I was on 20s (air ride equipped of course but I roll with the tires just below the edge of the fenders).
weds maverick 405s
20x9 +24 225/35 nitto nt555
20x10 +24 245/35 nitto nt555
no pull, all stock fenders, just shaved front and back!
caliper clearance passes the paper test! two sheets would NOT!
245 will fit a 9" width but you need to go higher in offset to clear the fenders, say +30ish. rears have tons more clearance/room!
again, be careful about wheel choice to clear the brake calipers. not all wheels will clear the brake calipers outright. if the ones you're eying won't fit, you will need to add spacers to clear the brakes which pushed out the wheel towards the fenders.
it's a balance of offset, tires, and ride height to make it all work!
Thanks for all the help thus far! Really good information. I'm hoping to run the 20x9's on 245/35/20's with the +35 offset. You think that will work up front?
I also plat to run the 20x10.5's if possible with 265/35/20 in the rear with the +40. If you don't think this will fit, I will run a square setup with the 20x9's all around.
fronts will be close but should be fine, if they clear your calipers as is. i ran a 245 on a 10 up front with no issues (on 19s, see below).
rears will not at +40. I would go with 20x10.5 +35 and 265 will be fine. i've ran a 275 on an 11" wide with no issues (on 19s, see below).
mind you, you will need to modify the fenders a little to clear. i suggest you do not roll them, but only trim/cut them.
for reference, i ran 19s too with wider widths and tires (and more aggressive offsets than the 20s):
19x10 +25 245/35 continental
19x11 +30 275/30 continental
front wheel back pad view; you can see how much higher the back pad is compared to the rear, to clear the brake calipers!
rear wheel back pad, shallower for maximum outer lip!
That is sick looking! You sure go through wheels! You have really been INCREDIBLY helpful!
I think as long as the calipers clear I am going to go with a square setup since the wheels I want don't have a lip anyway. I am going to run the 20x9's with +35 all the way around on 245/35/20's.
sorry to bother you again. but you know more about lexus ls400 wheel setups than anyone else ive seen post. i really need some help.
So the wheels i want are backordered. i dont see it changing anytime soon.
i found a wheel i really want on alibaba. the seller will make the wheels to my exact specs. im want to run 20's run in front and rear. i have a set of coilovers im going to install so i get rid of fender gap, but also not rub.i do not have interest in shaving or rolling. i know this can be difficult when running 20s.
all this being said, i want to run a staggered setup on these wheels. i wanted to know given my parameters, what widths and offsets i should ask for both the fronts and the rears? the seller can make these to exact spec
thank you in advance for any help you can provide to me.
