Because of this, I've been reading up on safe tips for using aftermarket HID kits. I read that it is good to turn on your lights while your engine is on and to turn them off prior to turning off your engine. In other words, only turn on/off your lights when your engine is on. Not sure if it's valid, but I'll take any precaution possible

I'm becoming extra paranoid of ruining one of the favorite aspects of my car now

I dont think thats valid cuz the kit hooks up to the battery...35 watts per bulb....very minimal compared to the stock bulb wattage.

I believe all cars usually have the alternator kick in after the car starts to power a few things like the lights....i could be wrong. I was told long ago that if you run the lights for a long time...keep the engine running so that it doesnt drain your battery.

Notice that if you leave your headlight on for 1 night....that the battery is totally dead the next morning? Compare it to all the hours each year you have your headlights on while the running the car.....last much longer cuz the alternator is doing the job....not the battery. That's how I understood it. If you alternator is dead, then the car is drawing all its power from the battery....which will lead to buying a new battery soon.

So does this mean our kits will drain our battery faster? Maybe...who knows? OR maybe I got this thing ALL wrong. Maybe the direct hookup to the battery is strictly for the ignitor....and the power to keep the HID bulbs on is from the OEM 9006 socket via the alternator power?

Anyone care to help with this?

Pete

well i don't think turning the headlight on whe the engine is not on will be THAT bad for the battery, but the damage is definitely there. coz' with the hid, you need a sudden sky high voltage (around 1000 volts?) to ignite the whole thing, that's something. that's the reason why turning it on and off quick is a very bad idea

if I remember correct, stock HID blinks the headlight when the factory alarm is triggered.
So I don' think blinking HID will be that bad, I guess as long as the blink rate is NOT too fast.

Brendan, you've been reassured pretty well by now, but I thought I'd add that I've had the red flash a few times under the same circumstances with my Phillips 4100k and Hella ballasts. I'm glad to hear it's nothing wrong too.
