I picked this up...Anyone done this?

Instead of purchasing 9006 low beams, purchase 9005 high
beam bulbs. One can modify the 9005's to fit in your lowbeam
socket. Get Sylvania Silverstar or Cool Blue 9005 bulbs, cut the
tabs in the socket, and cut the short tab on the rim and insert
it into the 9006 headlight socket. This supposedly increases
the output.

9006=1000 lumens @55w
9005=1700 lumens @65w
A 170% increase in lowbeam mode.
Add Fog lights=1000 lumens
Total 2700 lumens
If you want brightness with halogens, voila! HID
wannabes.

Sylvania Xenarc/Philips Ultinon: 3200 lumens @35w

Again, anyone done this?

 

You could also buy some 9006 halogen bulbs that run at 60 or so watts that give you a higher lumens output than the stock 9006 halogens.

It'd be better than cutting - if I did that I might end up cutting the whole bulb and wiring harness up and have 2nd degree burns from electric shocks :eek:

Wouldn't the 1700 lumens be a 70% increase in lighting?

i have done this before on my jeep grand cherokee. all you do is take a dremel tool and grind the guides or grooves from the inside of the bulb socket. it does make a difference. i used an aftermarket wiring harness with relays. the wires were thicker and sent more juice/amps/volts or what have you to the bulbs.

you might want to go the route of an aftermarket wiring harness as i have heard of people burning up there stock wires from the bulbs taking too much power.

 

Aside from the possibility of the wire unable to handle the higher current draw, another concern is would the headlamp lens be able to withstand the higher temperature? The lens looks like Lexan plastic to me.

 

The lens already withstands the 9005 that's installed in the
highbeam position, so why not a lowbeam, too? Same lens, eh?

The only other 9006's I've seen jump to 80w with no increase in lumens.

Hmm, new wiring harnesses may make this too expensive.

So, the proposition is moving from 55w to 65w in the
9006(lowbeam) position. An 18% increase (Right, Nick?).
So, can the current wiring harness support an 18% increase
in power consumption?

if you look on ebay you can probably find a new harness.......apc makes them also other brands...........they go for between 30-50$ when i see them on there. i have one on my rx with pia 9005 and 9006 bulbs. i don't know that it made any difference in brightness but if they burn up not a big deal/


all it is is a piggy back wire set. thicker guage wire to allow more juice. they pug into the stock wires then run to a relay and then pulls current directly off the battery then runs to the bulbs............

if you are interested and can't find one on e-bay i have an extra one i'll sell you for 23$ (price i paid).
