Hey I don't know if this will solve the problem with the burned out bulb indicator, but it might be worth a shot. I've seen a lot of people upset about the newer version and thought this might help!! superbrightleds.com

People say those get too hot. Will burn/melt something.

yes, have it going for 2 mins and it gets very hot. not a good idea when it's behind the lining

I have the solution for this - been running these for over a year now.
Just extend the wires of each load resistor a few feet with 16 or 18 gauge wire, so that you can mount them very far away, on the spare tire well wall, using double sided foam tape. The metal of the spare tire well acts as a heatsink, and furthermore, the spare tire is the closest thing to the resistor, and it's 3 or 3 inches away. Just mount them at least halfway down into the well, so that they are not up near the wood/carpet.
