I have the same type kioto ballast that I'm experimenting with at the moment. The resistor to destory is green and is buried in the goo. Soaristo site explains it well enough. I want to know what range of resistance the potentiometer needs to have good results and/or part numbers of what type works best. It would be very cool to have control of the wattage from inside the car... would it not?

[ Concerning the HID ballast ]

The HID ballast is the unit which controls the illumination of the HID lamp. The origin of a word is derived from "Ballast" of the weight which is installed in the ship's bottom of the boat. (Power control method)

In order to lock ターボジェクター in position of the genuine fog lamp, it means to install the ballast in リインホースメント, but the cord/code which has come out of the ballast that way, length is not enough delicately.
Then, the high-tension cable of resisting pressure 30,000V of the Sumitomo electric wire is used, cord/code length is extended in approximately 42cm.
Furthermore, because of electric leakage measure and noise measure, it covers the cord/code with the stain mesh, unites securely with tie-up.

Last night I made some more progress... I removed the "chip of resistance" as Soaristo says.
I used a dremel with a diamond engraving bit. I used the small round ball for the rough work and the thin pointy tip to clean up the rest. This is very technical detail oriented work. It's like micro surgery basically. I used my microscope to view the resistor after grinding it to make sure i got it all and not to damage the circuit board. I'm going to provide this as a service to others after I finish my first one. Doing it yourself you could mess up a 100 dollar ballast in a hurry.

Now I have to get solder which is .32mm solder, special flux, a 1mm tip for the soldering iron, some special heat proof epoxy and special silicone. Then I'll have my variable resistor installed and ready to test... Anyone have a resistance value for me? Bathiew did you look at the pinout of your potentiometer to see which resistance value is needed yet?

Maybe it would of been handy to test the resistor before destroying it

I think he said the higher resistance = more output. So I guess you would start with something very low to prevent blowing up the ballast/bulb. If you have another ballast, you might pop it open and try to see if you can get the part number on that resistor and look it up online. I'm getting my pair of Koito ballasts in this week. If the part number doesnt work out, I will try to desolder the resistor with some microscopic tools i have. Hopefully I can make some progress on this. But better yet, you guys that have done this mod....throw us a bone here.

One of you enterprising guys should market either a kit with a two position switch or a pre-wired ballast setup that is ready to install. Talk about your "group buys" this would be a natural. I got a headache from trying to read that translation
