I have a projector retrofit to my SC with Philips 6k and tonite, i rolled up next to a cop at the light. I didn't line up exactly as I am weary of them so my front bumper was prolly at about the door. Anyways, the worse happens, she backs it up to my window and asks me if my highs are on. i reply no and then she states that my lights are bright. she then tells me to turn off my fogs, yellow fogs, which i do and then she states better and drives off. Anyone know what's up with this? i'm kinda confused by this whole situation. I kno i'm not blindin motorists with my retrofit as i made sure the cutoff line is roughly the height of my side mirrors and i'm lowered low enough that it is pretty much 3-4 inches below a regular car's side mirrors. So if anyone could tell me what this was about reallie?

 

You are only allowed to have your fogs on in rain/bad weather

false information actually. you are allowed to drive with a max of 4 lights turned on at the same time. it's in the cali driving laws, you can get it from dmv. and i have asked cops and traffic school teachers. there is absolutely nothing wrong driving with fogs on, even if they are yellow. i have done that for yrs and never a problem.

now the brightness, it's totally up to them. if you are very sure that your cut off is good then it's just their judgement. to be honest, if you were driving say a bmw or s2k which already has projectors, she probably wouldn't have bothered you, coz' she's "used" to "brighter" lights from those cars

thanks for clearing that up rominl. I remember back then my friends were getting harassed by cops when having fogs on when it wasnt raining or bad weather. I guess they were just dumb cops.

 

Also aren't aftermarket HID kits like LexAnt has installed "for offroad use only" IE illegal to have in your car on the road?

That alone can be an issue, right? Kits aren't self adjusting, etc to keep the beams out of oncoming driver's eyes

 

The cop was just harassing you. You can't tell if a car's lights are causing excessing glare if they are just beside you. They need to be blocks away. Especially with a proper HID retro.

Now if she made that judgement as you were coming up from behind her, than it's possible that you need to aim your lights. Aiming with HID projectors is CRUCIAL because the light output under the cutoff is intense.

Your cutoffs should be 2" below horizontal at 25 feet. There are several sites which explain the procedure in detail.

Well, with the amount of stuff on our cars, if all an officer asked me to do was to turn off my fogs, I'd shut up, do it, and not let him/her have any reasons to check out what else they can get you for (front license, tint, ...).

Then turn the fogs back on when you are far enough away.

 

no problem. i was confused by the same statment too. in fact i was the one who asked the question during traffic school, and i got a chance to ask chp that question.

of course, just to be safe, i read the stupid ca law too

 

dave, he dfoesn't have hid kits on the car, he has the hid projector retrofit, which is the real deal (just like the ones from 5 series, audi, etc...) as long as its done right, the angle are set to the right position, it's the same as real hid

 

If it was "done right/same" then there would be self-leveler installed as well.

The cop was just giving you a hard time.

 

well i hear that now in california they're trying to make it illegal for retrofit hids. its just another restriction law in calfornia. just another reason for the cops to pull you over.

 

auto leveling is not required to make a retrofit done right (i never said same)
