Default HID housings VS. NON HID housings??

Quick question....

My current HID headlight housings are all fogged up to point you can barely even make out the lights inside. It's not even condensation. The insides literally look like a fire was started on the inside. They are almost a dark gray haze. Or imagine what your lights would look like if you took them apart and sprayed a mist of gray spray paint on them. Hard to explain I know...

Anways, at this point I feel like I have 2 options.

1.) Buy a pair off of eBay or
2.) Somehow take mine apart and clean the insides out and then seal them up real good.

I would like to do number 2 to if I don't have to pay for another set.

If option 1 is my only hope (I'm NOT buying new from the dealer) then the only problem I see is I can only find NON HID housing being sold on eBay.

So my question is: Would my OEM HIDS work with NON HID housings bought off of eBay??

Thanks,

Sean O.

I wouldn't go with the OEM halogen housings for 3 reasons:
1.) The reflectors in a free-form (crystal-clear front lens) housing are computer designed for the specific intensity of a light source. The D2R (HID) reflectors have a much different light source to work with than the 9006 (halogen reflectors); that is, approximately 3 times the lumens and a "hot spot" of a different shape.
2.) The two housings have bulb sockets designed specifically for their respective bulbs to be watertight. D2R's and 9006's are quite different in shape/
3.) If the GS is like the IS, the HID reflector is hinged horizontal to allow the auto-levelling system to raise/lower beam height. The fixed-position halogen housings won't be able to move with the motor.

Thanks Square!! That's exactly the information I was looking for.

Guess I have to keep looking for OEM "HID" housings.

In all seriousness, I REALY WISH my car hadn't had HIDS.
From the sound of it, it would of been 1,000 times easier to just buy the HID 9006 upgrade kits for $500.

This is turning out to be my biggest headache ever!

Thanks again!

Keep looking. The HID housings do come up on eBay. They just go for a little more than the halogen housings. As for the HID kits vs OEM, your big advantage is point 1 in squarehat's post. The reflectors are setup for brighter HID lighting and give you a much better beam and cutoff. You won't get that with the halogen housing/HID kit combo.

I guess I am on the reverse camp where I wish my car came with HIDs. The grass is always greener as they say.

i was wondering, i drive a 2000 rx300 and i wanted to upgrade to hid headlights. instead of buying an aftermarket kit or just getting it retrofitted, i want to buy the oem hid headlights off of ebay or something. if i did, i know the wiring would be different from my current 9006 wirings. anybody know if i could purchase some converters or something? any information would be greatly appreciated. thanks for your time.

i don't think there is any convertors, coz' the wiring isn't hard at all. just one power one gnd, my installer didn't even splice any wire to get my power connector in. it's easy.

also, keep in mind, you will not have autoleveling

ok that's one thing i am not 100% sure. i didn't do the install of my hid housing to replace my old halogen 9006, but the installer told me it wasn't too hard, and he didn't have to splice the wires/connectors, just twist stuff a bit and he actually put in the stock power connector. that's about what i know about the setup though
