Default LFA tuned Lotus Esprit

Yesterday Lotus did something rather... odd. The Malasian-owned British sports car maker sent the entire automotive world a high-res picture of Stonehenge and announced it represented the, "Dawn of a new era." We initially interpreted this to mean that the new Lotus Esprit would show up in Paris. We still think we're right about that part, but Lotus might have been letting a little bit more cat out of bag than they intended.

According to a report from Malaysia, Lotus owner Proton has hired a plethora of ex-Ferrari, Porsche and Aston Martin employees (including Frank Tuch, the former Director of Quality Management at Porsche) in hopes of transforming the brand away from Toyota-engined track day novelties (hello, Exige!) into a full-fledged Ferrari, Porsche and Aston Martin fighting luxury, high-performance brand. Of course that entails abandoning Colin Chapman's maxim, "Simplify, then add lightness," in favor of the German mandate to, "Complexify, then add steel." If you think the Italians are any better, realize that every new Ferrari ships with eighteen miles of wiring. But look on the bright side, the new cars (which will have some sort of hybrid-ness cooked in) could draw power from Chapman spinning his grave.

As we speculated yesterday, the new Esprit will need something resembling a V8 engine (at least) to not only fill the shoes of the old, long-loved Esprit, but also to compete with the world's best luxury/performance machers. Luckily for both Lotus and Lotus fans, engine-supplier Toyota has just such a motor in the form of the IS F's 416 horsepower, 371 pound-feet or torque 5.0-liter V8. Of course, if you want to play in the stratosphere with the likes of Ferrari, Porsche and/or Aston Martin these days, you're going to need at least 500 horsepower. But where would Lotus get an engine like that?

According to the report, the Lexus LFA's 552 hp, 9,000 rpm 4.8-liter V10 could be made available for Esprit duty, though it might be slightly detuned. Still, an aluminum and composite V10 is an aluminum and composite V10. While that might sound odd at first blush, Toyota (no doubt) spent a sick amount of yen coming up with the LFA's V10, but they're only building 500 or so LFAs, so why not recoup the development costs elsewhere? The question does become: Does the world want a 500+ horsepower Lotus dolled up with enough electronic whizbangery to compete with Europe's finest? Only time and the marketplace will tell.

From my understanding Lotus can buy Toyota engines not Lexus ones. That is why the cars have 276hp and don't have 306hp, they don't use the DI engines Lexus uses.

I doubt this will happen but I might tease the idea of owning a Lotus for this sole reason.

The LFA's engine is 'bespoke'. Or did we forget that? No LFA Espirit. Maybe a stronger version of the V6 from the camry used in the Evora. Maybe with a turbo. That's my guess. Say 400HP with light weight like Lotus is used to. 400HP with 2500lbs. sounds good to me.

Lotus has confirmed FI using the 3.5 Toyota engine in the Evora. We know they currently s/c the 1.8 in the Elise/Exige as an option.

The evora has about 280HP am I correct? I think the turbo version is the race version. I could be mistaken but i haven't heard of a production turbo Evora. That's why i say they could use this application in the Espirit.

I think it has 280hp, it uses the CAmry 3.5 V-6....Lotus announced they will make a F/I Evora and and electric one...

After the Evora was officially revealed in London, Lotus CEO Michael Kimberley has made it clear that more variants of the 2+2 were on the way. Six different versions are planned, including a convertible – originally confirmed the day the Evora debuted – that will keep the coupe fresh over its eight-year lifespan.

While a drop-top is nice, power is what the people crave. So within two years expect another naturally aspirated variant that boosts the 3.5-liter V6's engine from 280 to 320 hp. After that, it's all about forced induction. The mid-mounted V6 has been positioned in the engine bay to accept a supercharger, which will bring output up and over 400 hp, dropping the 0-60 time to under four seconds and making the Evora "S" a serious contender to the Porsche 911 Turbo.

While unlikely, I do think the world would love to see and LFA engined esprit. However, reading the rest of the article, I will *****slap the person at proton who thinks Lotus needs to become more complex and luxurious.

I knew it used the Camry engine, I keep up with Lotus and Toyota. But the Evora race car has 400HP. Does that use a Turbo? I don't think it does. Again I could be mistaken though.

EDIT: No Turbo for the Race (cup) Evora. Just a larger 4 liter V6 making 'over 400PS'

If that's not one of the prettiest cars there is! Someone tell me I'm not alone!

Evora is quite a looker, very well balanced, a good everyday supercar IMO

id love to see what they end up with in the new Esprit

i dont see them adopting the german philosophy end up working well though
why mess with a formula that has worked?
but of course id welcome Lotus to prove me wrong
