Building my own android auto / carplay unit
I'm a passionate elec and comp engineer and since I love my 2006 lexus rx, I decided to build an android auto / carplay infotainment unit and make it as open source as possible. This is a hobbyist project and may take a while and the reason I'm here is that I do not know anything about the interfaces/protocols on the existing Nav system. For example, I know Grom Vline offers a unit, but I don't know how it talks to the existing display and how decodes steering wheel buttons into commands. Do all cars follow a standard ? Like LVDS for video ? Unfortunately, I did not find many resources online so I thought I ask here. Hopefully, I'll fill my gap of knowledge in this area with your help.
my main reason to do this is that I'm not interested in a solution that I don't know how it works. there are a lot of videos about bugs and lags and crashes, and there is nothing we can do about it since the firmware is closed and we only depend on a few people who work at that company. I want my unit to be as responsive as possible and easy to program and modify.
Let's start something great.
Thanks in advance.
Best,
Amir
