Is this speaker mounting position a good idea?
I've been playing around with ideas for mounting speakers in my Rx330. I really like the idea of having the tweeter & midrange up high to keep the soundstage elevated. Of course the problem is the stock midrange is 2.5", and nobody makes a quality component that size. I can't put a bigger unit in without cutting into the dash, and even then, there's no guarantee it would fit. So, I mocked up this idea out of aluminum foil, paper, & saran wrap, and I wanted to get some opinions on it. The front passenger's ears are about 17 degrees off-axis with this setup. The time differential due to path length differences is about 1.04 ms. I can correct that with my Alpine PXA-H700. My concern is that I've never seen this done before and I'm wondering if it's even legal.
This particular pod is sized for Boston 6.53 components. I mocked one up for Dynaudios as well, but it was bigger than my wife could stand.
My current plan for the complete system configuration is:
Boston Acoustics ProSeries 6.53 up front (tweeter& midrange on the dash, 6.5LF in the door)
Boston Acoustics ProSeries 6.5 coaxially mounted in the rear doors
Boston Acoustics ProSeries 12.5LF 4 ohm sub
McIntosh MC431 100Wx4 biamping the front
McIntosh MC431 100Wx4 - 2 channels devoted to rear and two bridged for the sub
Alpine PXA-H700
AudioControl EQL used as a line level converter if necessary (I'm not sure it is.)

I don't know dude. Personally I'd put the mid in the door even if you have to cut the hole for it and put the tweet in the stock location if it fits. I just don't think it will look good the way you plan to have it.
Just my $0.02, but it's your ride. Good luck.

Long ago.....
Yea know, Rich Coe, then of ALpine and now of Eclipse did just that type of mounting in his Suburban and Bug. He called them "A-Boxs." It was a play on the then enclousres call "Z-Boxes."
Yes, it will work, but may be a it bright. Careful with that time correction BS... much misunderstood.
Have you considered the kick panels for the M&T's?
I wrote an article years ago for Auto Sound Magazine on this subject. You can down load a text file of it at my site www.usdaudio.com - under downloads I think...
