why does everyone change their headunit?

I believe it was gavin who originally had it in the SC. If you wanted it could also play CDs, DVDs and MP3s so the versitility is awesome for this kind of setup. If you wanna get a little crazy you can install a wiresless ethernet card and check out CL in your SC (only draw back is you can go very far from the base but still a cool idea) and of course add more MP3s on the system without ever taking it out of the car. The possibilities are endless if you got the money and ideas.

Yea, it was Gavin who originally had the PC in his ride. Unfortunately the car was wrecked, so that was the end of that. I believe in a related post there was a link to someone's website who was working on making a commercially available "auto PC". He had some type of prototype in a Jetta, and the system looked very promising.

If you like 'music' then the stock unit wont cut it for long.
If you like speed then you're gonna modify your car after a while.
It depends on what headunit you use and how its installed.
IMHO, London Bill has the nicest aftermarket deck. It really blends in with the stock stuff
Hi-psi: I hear ya!! May wanna look into MP3's or sum sort of a 'Hard drive' based unit

Im having trouble looking for a double DIN deck. I was hoping for DVD/MP3, but its looking like nothing exists like that
in double DIN.
Here's a pic of my setup. I've been told that I have one of the cleaner looking setups around, so see what you think. The black plexi "Lexus" at the bottom is temporary until I get around to getting the new S-AFC2 installed.

yea i guess i'll change my headunit soon then. the sound qual from my speakers suck. Has anyone put on a touchscreen on their car yet? It would be nice if you guys can post some pics of your sc's with tv's/hu/dash. anything that is changed. I wana check out what mods have people done to their sc's internally.
the fine tuning and versatility of an aftermarket headunit...along with more power makes up for the slightly unperfect look that a stock unit has. When you make the list you'll realize there is more positives then negatives of an aftermarket unit.
Heres London Bill's setup. I think it's clean, but that space under his deck would bug me.
I'm sticking with stock until I see something that looks flush.

i have a 1993 lexus sc300 and i recently bought a single DIN headunit. i understand that there is no face kit made for lexus and tha a custom face kit must be made. has anyone installed a deck in this car before? i would like to know how difficult it is to install it, remove the stock headunit, bypass the stock amp, and fabricate a custom face kit out of AVS plastic. thanks!
I'm probably one of the few here that kept the stock headunit in my GS. It isn't the base Pioneer, but the Nakamichi, and I'll put it up in sound quality against just about any aftermarket headunit. Also has high-level outputs. With the GS ('99) Nakamichi system, it's the entire rest of the system that's garbage, not the headunit.

The keyboard that you see is how he changed the music. He had the moniter hooked up to a comp. (see in pic one) that had a crap load of songs downloaded to it. He was in the process of having a way to search through them by category, artist name, etc. And his music won't skip like CD's, can download any song that you want onto it easily (just disconnect the comp. in the trunk and hook it up to a moniter at your house.
I also remember him having Lexus Premium system come up when he turned the comp. on. It was really cool.

Yeh, I bought the system off Gavin and basically tweaked it to my liking. I can only take about 10% of the credit for this system (if Im lucky). Gavin, if youre reading this, thanks again. I recently upgraded to a black/black 99 sc300 and of course, I swapped the system into the new car. I finally completed the custom keyboard assembly which Im very proud of. Its concealed under the ashtray cover and looks very clean. I will post some pics asap.

1.) Trunk setup. I had the computer painted black to match the car ($20). The amp is a Sony 5 channel Xplod amp. I forget the model number at the moment but for $140, it does the job quite nicely.

*Mods, Im having trouble uploading the pics directly. If someone would set it up so that its not necessary to click the link, I would appreciate it.
