Default Needs to trouble shoot an issue

So I've done some reading on here but can't find exactly what I'm looking for.
I've installed a couple of subs and an amp using a LOC. I tapped into the speaker wires going into the stock sub.
So what I'm experiencing is my subs should be hitting harder than they are. I haven't had a system for some time but back then I installed full setups and never tapped into a stock system like this. They hit much harder with less power. Now I've read there is some technology in the the stock system to reduce distortion to the sub. Is this true? Is there away around it? Would tapping into the wires before they go through the amp help? Am I screwed and just have to deal with it? I did install a gain control so that I can turn the amp up but it still doesn't sound as good as I would like. It seems to bleed off when I turn it up over 40, 42ish. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks.

Well after doing some more research it sounds like a sound processor is required. This will allow you to control the signals instead of the stock unit. Has anyone tried one of these with success? Pros/Cons?
