Center front speaker on 2002 GS300

Center front speaker on 2002 GS300
I have a 2002 GS300 with the ML sound system. I notice that there's a speaker grill in the center of the dash, but it doesn't seem to do very much. Is it used in the ML system, and if so what does it do?

Does anyone have a non-Mark Levinson sound system and if so, does the center front speaker do anything? Or does anyone else have an ML system and does your center speaker do anything?
