There's the new Pioneer NEX line coming out soon that is getting mixed reviews as well. Apparently they fixed some problems but created some new ones. I think maybe they're trying to do too much.
It is probably the most difficult piece of audio or video gear I have purchased in my life, and I have purchased equipment for over 45 years. What makes it even more difficult is the fact that it's something that gets installed into your car that most of us pay to have installed, so if you don't like it, you have to pay someone to un-install it and then re-install something else that you have no idea how well the new one will work.
Yeah, I've been researching for about 8 months now. Have you looked at the Parrot ASTEROID? It's a little bit different concept and gets good reviews, but I'm not sure it's what I want. The price is right.
I'm leaning toward the Pioneer AVIC-5000NEX. It hasn't been out long enough to have many reviews though. I may wait a few months. There's also the 4000 (no nav) 6000 which is HD radio ready, the 7000 and 8000 that have a bigger screen. Each one adds features and the price goes up. The sweet spot for me is the 5000. It's the least expensive one with nav and I don't care too much about HD radio.
My brother works for Apple and told me they have something in the works for car audio.

looking for a Head unit also... I think Pioneer has the best options and can get a decent Pioneer system for around $400. I'm looking for something also with Pandora, bluetooth, and iphone compatibility
I just did had an installation of a Pioneer AVIC 8000NEX into my 2004 Lexus LS430. The unit itself is great and has a lot of nice features. There are a couple of very important issues to know. There are different cables and cable installations required depending on the smartphone that you use. If you use this unit make sure the installer follows the directions for your smartphone. I use an iPhone 4 and I had them add an HDMI cable (there is an input) that will allow it to work with an iPhone 5 with an adapter. I also used the BeatSonic for the in dash installation. My LS430 was without previous Nav or Mark Levinson system. The unit retails for $1399 but I got it for that price with installation included.
