Default Remote Locks & Mirrors INOP

I have a 95 SC400 ~110,000 miles, my wife's daily driver. In the last month the remote mirrors just stopped working and the door locks have been dying slowly over the past 3 months.
Took the car to an electrical saavy friend who told me it was a computer related problem and he didn'y want to tackle it. COMPUTER???
Why in the world does a car need "a computer" to move door lock & mirror assemblies?
I took it to the dealer and confirmed my worst fears...yup, computer's bad...needs a new one, $475+labor...door lock actuators, $280 ea. +labor.

I can manually actuate mirrors & door locks a long time, for a thousand bucks.

I know I'm not the first/only one to have this happen.
How have you guys delt with this? Upgrade, retrofit, live with it.?
