Default Amp Crossover vs Bass Blockers

Hi... I have never used bass blockers nor have I used the amp crossover other than for a subwoofer. What I'm wondering is if anyone has used the hi-pass for the mains and lo-pass for the sub and had it work okay without leaving a major dip or peak in the music. Say setting the sub lo-pass to 200 hz and the mains crossover to hi-pass 170 hz or something like that. If that works well I'd rather do that than put a cheap capacitor inline on my speakers....

All feedback welcome!

You are doing this with two different amps right? I hope you're using a 4-channel for the mids/highs and a mono for the sub.

As for the crossovers, yes the high pass/low pass system you described is the basic idea behind tuning. Crossovers are by no means perfect or exact, so unless you set them at ridiculously disparate values, you should not have any major holes as long as you have quality equipment.

Your exact crossover depends on how good your speakers are, as well as your listening preferences. I personally would never use 200hz on a sub (I've never had any of my woofer setups run above 100hz) but if you feel it sounds better, go right ahead. For the mids, set the high pass at about the same point. I've no idea what speakers you're using, but most decent 6 inch speakers will perform perfectly fine crossed over at around 100hz.

For the record, I'll be using an Alpine 4-channel amp for the mids-highs and either an Alpine 2-channel bridged or a Kenwood Class D for the sub. The speakers are Boston Acoustics SE60 components in front and SE65 coaxs in the rear door. Sub will either be an Image Dynamics ID V.3 or JL Audio 8W1V2-4 8" in the rear deck.
